  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cool idea for a TV series - and you can have it for free

The situation: a shopping mall in the early 1980s. The mall hasn't been doing great for a few years, until a new member of the board of management brings in new ideas that turns it all around. Featuring lots of '80s nostalgia, Christmas episodes galore, subtle journeys into liminal spaces, the hopes and dreams of a wide variety of characters, and complex perspectives on what retail means beyond merely selling stuff.

Good basis for a series, considering the 80's nostalgia is pretty high still. With shows like Stranger Things, The Goldbergs, GLOW, etc as well as Top Gun Maverick all doing very well with audiences. A lot of kids of the 80's like myself are all in their 40's now and that can influence shows getting made as many of the showrunners and producers are in this age bracket (40's and 50's).

Can you reveal a bit more about the way the new board manager turns things around (without giving away the whole storyline if you want to protect it)?

Not really! I have no idea. But I have nothing to protect. I am casting this idea to the four winds. I suppose this person could do what we might call rogue, or "not square." Like, hire more cleaners, make the interior more grand, make the experience a magical one. Have live music (as in a pianist or a jazz trio). Have a fountain. Improve lighting. At night, when it's closed, make it a beacon that people can always notice if they're driving by - it should look alive, even at night. Saving money on electricity is false economy. Make it a space where people feel a sense of community, without having to live in the pockets of strangers. Make the arcade bigger, put it next to the cinemas, get more machines and make the games cheaper. Stuff that actually works but isn't something a business school square would do.

The title is the tricky part. What do you think you would call it? I'd like to name it something that resonates with something more than just "shopping" or "profit" or "business".

Yeah but WHAT HAPPENS
What happens in Mad Men?
