So I've been lurking on the board for quite a long time and have an interesting question for you all. I apologize if this is the wrong forum section but I took a guess that this is the best place to ask.

I've recently come to work for a company in India from the USA and am doing an inventory of old equipment. In storage I've found about 4-5 full sets of S2 and S3 Cooke primes (yes complete sets as the company is over 52 years old). All of these have been converted to the old ARRI straight mounts. I want to convert a few of these (the 100mm and 75mm) to PL mount. Who does this? Is the glass worth saving? I hear the 75mm get yellow due to the radioactive coating (but are still lovely soft close up lenses) and the 100mm are still used today.

It just seems a crime to relegate them to the dust bin or garbage.

With the shortage of PL mount glass currently facing everyone due to the REDs is anyone converting old glass? Any idea how much it would cost?

Thanks for the help,

Hi,

Just putting converter mounts would run to approx $300-500 per lens. Complete rebuilds have been done by Century & Van Diemen it's very expensive between $5000 -10,000 PER LENS.

The lenses do vary in quality so you could probably make a couple of very nice sets out of what you have, the 75mm are very yellow but that is not a real issue with digital color correction.

Tomas,

Have PM'd you.

One needs a very specific design PL adaptor for the Cookes due to the way they focus. Part of the collar of the mount ring actually rotates with the focus making a standard adapter non-functional. I don't think this one would work.

Hey Mitch,

The original arri standard mount doesn't move, it can't move monted to a camera, so a PL adapter that lives on the standard mount can't interfere too much....???? Can you be more specific? I just can't wrap my brain around this.

Thanks,

Nick

The old Cooke lenses rotated partially within the mount when focusing. The mount barrel was in two parts, an upper and lower section. The lower section had the tab which held the lens in place, the upper section rotated when focusing. Not a problem on the old Arri standard mount, but most adapters grab the lens in such a way that the upper section can no longer rotate.

It's been a LONG time and I'm really reaching into dusty parts of my brain on this, so I may have some details wrong. Suffice to say that you cannot stick any ol' Arri standard to Arri PL adapter on a Cooke Speed Panchro and expect it to work.

Lots and lots of Arri standard mounted primes rotated in the camera mount.

I'll have to take your word for it, twas a little before my time. I guess I've only ever seen the Schniders, and Ang. standard mounts so I assumed they were all like that. Kinda love to see one ;-)

Cheers,

Nick

The Schneider "Cine-Xenon" are the ones you are thinking of. The Older Schneider "Xenon" and the Cooke Speed Panchros all focus with the barrel actually rotating inside the lens mount. We still get these in all the time since we work evry week on Arri S cameras. We have to polish the Arri Standard mount so that the lens will rotate smoothly.

a standard to Pl adapter will not work with the cookes, you need a special adpater, it does have a small lever that fits into the cut out on the standard mount which allows the rotation within the adapter, the adapter effectively replaces the ARRI bayonet mount. Les bosher makes a a very good cooke adapter.

Bob.H is right. The special adapter Arri makes is called Universal adapter and it serves Arri Standard mount as well as Arri B-mount lenses. Though its price will normally be well above the price of your Cooke/Schneider/Zeiss std mount lens.

I use Les Bosher's quick release PL adapter and it works very well.

One word of caution: I had to have the mount itself sprayed inside for tighter tolerance and 2 lenses mounts shaved off ever so slightly to make a tight fit across all the lenses, since depending on use, each mounts tolerance will be a little bit different. Paul Duclos did a great job matching them all for a tight but smooth fit.
