  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cooke - New Vintage - Panchro Classic, April 2017

The value of having the original look of vintage lenses with the availability of new replacement parts cannot be underestimated. We just spent 3 months trying to find the right parts to fix a damaged Zeiss Superspeed 35mm. It ended up costing the price of a whole lens. It won't be the last time.

For reference,

Cooke 5i T1.4 32mm is $23k USD.
Cooke S4i T2 32mm is $18k USD.
Cooke Mini S4i T2.8 32mm is $7.3k USD.

Not sure I agree that the Minis are over-priced. Hand-built boutique lenses with complex precision mechanics and exotic glass will always have a premium cost compared to mass-produced consumer lenses. Cooke made the decision to manufacture their 'affordable' line by reducing the specs instead of compromising build quality or using cheaper materials. Other manufacturers like Zeiss did the opposite with their Compact Prime lenses. Different strokes. Also, T2.3 Minis would directly compete with their S4 line. So that would never happen for variety of reasons.

Classic S2/3 Cooke Speed Panchros are quite soft and flare easily. Shot wide open, they have a very diffused low-con filtered look. They have chromatic aberration and swirly bokeh. They can be quite warm and very pretty and forgiving on faces. This is the quality that Cooke will be trying to reproduce as faithfully as possible, while housing them with perfect modern mechanics made to the same high standards as their other lenses. Therefore, they will likely not be cheap.

Completely agree with everything you said.

I'd like to know if they are going to utilize modern S4/mini S4 aperture assembly, or if they are going to attempt to recreate the original iris. On one hand, it would be great to have bokeh at matching stops match original speed panchros, but on the other, if mixing with S4's like they did on Midnight in Paris, it might be added benefit (and cost benefit) to reuse the existing S4 iris assembly and govern it to 2.2 or 2.3, like they govern the aperture assembly to 2.8 on mini's.

Good luck to them! Super excited to see how close they get. The great part is that their glass is still made on the same equipment used to make speed panchros, so they have the receipe and the exact same tools in some instances/processes. I think it's just going to come down to the coatings. Exciting and great idea by Cooke.

Good point, although if this is the first step in creating a separate Panchro anamorphic line, then they might want to go with a more circular iris shape. But that's probably years away.

SO UPDATE TIME: I got my name on the list early. Might have one of the first 2 sets in the states. I got 18,25,32,40,50,75,100. the price per lens was about 9100. So all in was about 63k. Pl mount/lens data/matched color/decently light/1 year warranty/new parts available/easy service. Perfect recipe for amazing lenses. I cant wait for April to come. :)

Super stoked for you Domenic! Really looking forward to reading your impression on the lenses. The lenses will make a nice addition to your list of already impressive inventory for glass!

Curious if new PANCHRO 18 and 25mm cover full sensor on WEAPON HELIUM? Assuming 32mm and above should be fine.

I imagine that the wides will not fully cover Helium at 8K...like most S35 lenses, they will probably cover Helium at 7K...

They claim to cover s35 and then some. I think the image coverage will be similar any of the s35 lenses. but at least the 18 will be useable now where it was real tough to use before.

True, but most s35 lenses end up having more coverage from 35mm on upwards. It's often the wides that can't quite cover. Fingers crossed Cooke added some magic to these and the 18 has pretty good coverage.

I believe Tom is correct. Looking at the charts, it'll only cover up to 7K without field of view issues. Image circle of these new lens is 31.4, I believe.
