  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Convince me why my EPIC M costs about 5 times as the Scarlet package

Umm guys... the epic is worth about $120k in my opinion.

Look at the competition. The scarlet is worth about 25k. Just apples to apples pricing. I mean hell, the c300 is 20k.....

I totally agree with Timur.

I wouldn't even know where to begin in putting a value $ on my Epic M. I am constantly amazed at this camera and so grateful that Red exists to push both the envelope and the Big guys. 10 years ago I could never have dreamt that I would be holding this type of raw power and image quality in my hands for under 100k. I've been watching and lusting for a Red camera since the official unveiling of Red at NAB years back and it took me this long to save up for one of their cameras. Needless to say, the wait was definitely worth it.
I don't regret my Epic M purchase and never will.
I look at Scarlet as an incredible bonus cam for Epic users like myself.

We are excited to receive our first Red camera and it is a Scarlet-X. It will suit the overwhelming majority of shots that we want to do very well and when it won't fit the bill we will rent an Epic or some other camera that does. For us the Scarlet is a better value for money because it will do everything that we need it to do frequently enough that we cannot justify the additional cost to purchase an Epic at this time. With all of that said, I wish we were able to justify purchasing an Epic-M instead. It has a lot of features that would be really nice to have.

I thought this was resolved like 10 pages back? Didn't the OP realize that his Epic M was the right choice? If so, we should probably just close this thread...or perhaps rename it to avoid people just coming in and posting based on the thread title, without having it all.

By the way Nick, congrats on your Scarlet X purchase!

Second, it's using a larger portion of the lens, so any imperfections in your glass are also zoomed-out from visibility.

Kind of the opposite... using a wider larger portion of the image circle really just means your seeing the parts of the image the manufacturer never intended. Just cause a lens covers 5K doesn't mean it was ment to.

Everything else you said is dead spot on though.

Just want to add that, i am very lucky to be part of the stage 2 program and getting my Epic X at an awesome price. Thanks Jarred for that!

Thank you, Kegan! Nice to see another Toronto guy on here.

I apologize if I entered late into a discussion that had already been resolved. That teaches me for not reading the whole thread through before responding, I suppose.

You were able to just trade your epic in and get the scarlet + cash?

Well I may be the only one, or maybe not but I called my bomb squad rep tonight and returned by Epic (had it less than 10 days). Scarlet will fill most of my needs and I can rent when it doesn't. I could justify the Epic price before Scarlet, but after not as much. I live in LA and had planned on renting my Epic out as much as possible. If I already had my Epic and had gotten a better feel for the renter's market I might have felt more comfortable keeping it, but I felt it was too big of a risk without knowing much of an impact the lower priced Scarlet will have on the Epic rental market. Maybe none but for me it would be a big gamble to keep it. I would love to have 300 FPS but it's a specialized feature and i've gotten along fine without it so far. Glad that you're all happy with your Epic's after tonight though.

Admittedly I was really pissed after Scarlet specs were first announced just days after i got my Epic. Now i'm getting more excited about it. I'll spend the money I saved on glass. Cheers to Red for giving us options.

This was a November post. Jim is right, the Epic- M owner's have had the jump on the Stage 3 (me #3033) crowd. I expect I'll be waiting another month, maybe more. Plus, M rentals will get a premium market until the X's flood. That's 3-4 months of rentals and the highest possible price, if business is favorable. What's the price difference between the M and X, less than $10k? How much are people renting Epic's for? Last I checked, $2000/day. What's the lowball/friend hook up price? $500-800/day?

While I am here, anyone renting their Epic's? What insurance company do you recommend?

Buyers that bought EPIC-M late... wouldn't have had an EPIC-X for several months. They got one. And most made money. As opposed to not having one and not making money.

Several people told us they paid for their EPIC-M in less than two months.

It's much easier for people to complain and criticize others then to put their best foot forward and take a leap.

"Stop arguing. Go shoot something." My favorite quote on REDUSER. Who said this? Jim?

Is the world really in such a bad shape??

... it seems like, no matter how good a new product is, no matter how much idealism, heart, sleepless nights, money, goodwill, love ... & x ... has been poured in ...

there will be a crowd, a big crowd, that will complain.

this is demotivating, folks!!!

Why is it, that all of this stuff comes out?
Isn´t there anything of value to share, contribute, create and have us all enjoy ... ?

Where are the 0.1% of people, that are excited and focused on the future ...
please PM me ... i need to know you!

:-)

If people essentially start complaining that Red made the Scarlet "too good for too cheap" that is really going to piss me off. Do you want Red to hold back technology?? That's what Canon and Sony have been doing for decades. I want Red to put out the very best camera they can at the very best price possible the very moment it's ready, period, end of story.

If you misjudged your purchase and don't think you will use your Epic's full potential, sell it and get a Scarlet.

Well actually, I want Red to do exactly what they have been doing - which is NOT releasing things that make the big (for me) investment I made two months ago be worth nothing. I think they have behaved very, very well. I feel safe giving them my money. If technology moved TOO fast, we would never be able to amortize our investments, and could not afford to buy any cameras of our own in that landscape, which I would very much miss doing. I think there is a practical speed limit at a business level, but Red is not exceeding it. In a staged, cine world, we only shoot so many days per year (because many days are prep and client discussion time). Our segment is a lot of people - and we would all be cut out of defensible camera buying past a certain speed threshold..
