  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Control...

The memory slot idea is interesting...

In any case, I think it's pretty clear we are seeing a perspective centered on the lower front of the camera. And it's pretty likely those are audio cables... so something that incorporates a mic or some sort of audio input breakout is likely.

As for ergonomics, with the weight of the gunner itself, and with the the weight of some lenses (including the RPP's), I think it's quite likely that the balance point for the camera might be just about where we see the shoulder cutout.

That would put the body+accessories farther backward on the shoulder, although somewhat higer up, as the brain itself is taller than the modules.

We may find that the gunner incorporates several things nesessary to use the camera in a "body backward" configuration. I'd be interested in seeing what viewfinder/monitoring options will like with your eyeball rougly even with the lens mount if that's the case...

Biggest takeaway point from this comment for me is the lens mount being roughly equal with your eye. I imagine one of Red Gunner's 'necessary things' would be a focusing unit- as there is no way the operator could use a standard configured follow focus (your hand would be next to and a few inches in front of your ear).

Whether this is an auto-focus mechanism or a handle-mounted manual focus is yet to be seen.

I'm with the blender idea. This thread has got very, very thilly. It's caller the Gunner 'cause we're all gunner spend the next month guessing what it's gunner do.

The things Jim does to amuse himself...

Regarding the EPIC-X:
It has EVF/LCD output plus CF recording via the side CF module, HD-SDI out, HDMI out, 2 channels of Balanced Mic Audio in + 48v Phantom power, Headphone out, Power in, RS-242, Genlock/GPIO, all on the Brain itself.

If you need more I/O or full sized ports, you of course go out to the modules.

I think it's a pretty safe bet that the connectors on the front are the 2 channels of audio in.

If you want more inputs, you can get the Pro Cinema I/O module, which we already know about.

What if we take a clue from the names, that the RED Gunner is an alternative designed for "Run n' Gun" shooting rather than "Cinema" shooting, and that it has multiple audio inputs and mixing controls to mix it down to stereo for the inputs on the brain.

I like the memory module idea, but so far we're only seeing audio connectors, and no data connectors.

It could be that the numbers are labeling XLR inputs (and/or pots to control them!) and the number 1 input is either somewhere else on the Gunner, like how shoulder-mount cameras have rear XLR inputs, but also one near the front for an on-board shotgun mic. Or possibly, channel 1 is a shotgun mic already built into the Gunner itself, although that would be a big surprise for me.

The shape of that placed under the lens makes it look almost like an ENG-type handle for handheld, plus XLR inputs and maybe some extra recording modules. To me, this looks like the accessory that allows people to have some of the functionality/form factor of some of the smaller 'prosumer' cameras like the EX-1/3 and the HPX-170, where, you have a grip, and xlr inputs, and maybe a XL-1-type shoulder mount.

That would make it ready for run and gun type productions without any additional modules, making the camera (especially the fixed and 2/3" cinema) plus a red gunner pretty comparable in specs to the other cameras I've mentioned, and if it were to go for a couple thousand dollars (pure speculation) then it would make the fixed scarlet pretty comparable to them in price as well.

If that's completely wrong, I'm guessing it's for fly-by-wire control of manual lenses, with ports for lens control.

Epic seems greeeaaaat.. and irresistible..

But.. still.. I know i'll miss R1.. I don't have enough money to keep R1 and buy an Epic.

What if... Just what if.. after the trade we get back the empty body of Red (for a certain fee of course)..

A way to remember the old good days of RED DIGITAL REVOLUTION.

A good story for our grand-children. We can show, not just tell that: "WE WERE THERE"..

There are precedents for modular audio input/shotgun mount/handle units, and audio input/shoulder mount units.

JVC's GY-HM100U
Panasonic's AG-HMC40
Sony's HVRA1U
Canon made the MA-100 and MA-200 shoulder mount/XLR input units for the XL series, and now they have the MA-300 which is a shoe-mount unit like the others I listed above.

As a bonus, I just realized as I struggled to find those cameras and get the names right for this post, how fantastic it is that RED has given their cameras names like EPIC and SCARLET, rather than obscure combinations of letters and numbers.

Regarding the EPIC-X:

...SNIP...

I like the memory module idea, but so far we're only seeing audio connectors, and no data connectors.

I wondered about that too. It occurs to me that the "frame" of the gunner (the gunmetal gray section the audio cables drop in to) appears to extend toward the rear of the camera where we can't see it in this render. It could possibly make signal connections at the back of the brain where the ports are.

Either cables could exit the frame (it does appear that it could be a hollow channel) at the back side where you plug them in, or the frame itself could be molded such that there are mating connectors the brain "snaps" in to.

ummm...Jim? This is really pretty.
Are you sure you aren't done with the bugger yet?

This is the demonstration you can fall in love with something OTHER than a woman :drool5:

It looks uber-cool...yet, is there a chance we can see it in someone's hands (I am talking about this specific set-up)? I still have troubles figuring out the proportions...

Oh, and not to mention it's illegal to broadcast video w/o a license (yes, I know we do it all the time on set...)

It is illegal to broadcast over certain frequencies such as the FCC regulated spectrum for TV if you aren't licensed. It is not illegal to do wireless date transmissions over your wifi network, including video.

I agree the bnc area needs more breathing room.

Just want to add that while some laughed at my whole projector thing, there is nothing wrong with dreaming. Moon landing? Submarine?

What about all the other insane stuff that has been announced or happened already! Red Code? 100+ fps full resolution on a CMOS?, 200+ fps on a cropped sensor?, higher bit depth, higher dynamic range, higher sensitivity... evolving colorimetry? firmware updates? modular design, a myriad of sensors, Red Ray, Red Rocket, RPPs! Red Mote, the list goes on...

What was crazy yesterday is happening today, so why the f* should people be silenced?! Don't want to upset people that are having a hard time keeping up with Red's actual gear as it is? Chill out. Just don't read my posts. What some non-shooter, non-DP guy says shouldn't affect you. Or ask yourself why it did.

This is not a pragmatic discussion where people are learning how to handle an important aspect that of current workflow. It is a thread filled with anticipation, and hypothetical guesswork. Only Jim's, Jarred's and Red team member's actual updates matter here... skip mine if they bother you.

But, if you are not afraid to use your imagination, and want to have an informal conversation that might amuse you, even if just a little... consider your reaction for the extremely unlikely event that Jim turns the brains into red-rocket/red-ray replacements! It sounds like a lot of fun. It might make you chuckle at least. It might be a way to pass the time while we read this thread waiting for more Red team announcements. There might not be many of those though, since they are a little busy finishing a Vernean camera as we speak.

Maybe some people laughed cause I said 2k/4k. :) Oopsie. Now that I think about it, the 4k thing in such a small package is ludicrous, ATM. Perhaps even the 2k deal... I have little to no clue about projectors. I am sorry I disappointed you, oh holy one. But at least, whatever goes into a Red Rocket is in a Brain. So it is a semi-plausible at the very least.

Just eat some chocolate, skip my posts. And please remember that I am the guy that will buy you a beer if we ever meet, in hopes that you can teach me more about digital acquisition, cinematography or any of my other applied interests.

This sounds like the most logical.

What a lovely idea! It fills the void.
