Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Recently picked up a cy 25 2.8 mmg, full duclos mod, perfect condition, it went real cheap on ebay. After a morning of shooting Otus 55 1.4 tests on Helium and being amazed (OMFG Amazed) at the combo, my shooting buddy asked if I had a 25mm as that is his favorite focal length on S35. Haven't tried it on anything else but is you are going S35 Helium, and like Contax, buy this (omfg amazing) lens.

Have you tried the Otus 28mm on the Helium yet? I think this will be my favorite setup. Can't wait to try it out tomorrow.

No, I have not. I plan on getting all the OTUS. I have used the 28 and 85 on Dragon and a7rII before and they are super. What I am going to do over next couple of weeks is go through all my Contax and ze and Canon cn e, ef and rangefinder ltm and various other glass. That 25 2.8 was an eyeopener. I don't think you should take your past impressions of various lenses and transfer them to Helium. It is a different animal and there are bound to be surprises in the lens drawer. Exciting times.

Also the Otus are big and heavy and have their place. I want to find the lightest smallest great performing lenses for travel. I thing there is gold in the Contax hills. The 100-300 on Helium is fantastic.

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm selling a 16mm Zeiss T/2.4 Super 35mm format lens in Arri Std mount, which would cut nicely with any set of Contax primes.
The glass is clean and the mechanics works fine, so this is a great lens for a rehousing or cinemod.
Current bid is only 599USD and the auction finishes in less than 23 hours: http://www.ebay.es/itm/152195751046?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
Will ship worldwide. PM with questions.

I have this lens modded to EOS and its amazing! What a great price!!

So jealous of your Helium tests!!!

I pulled the trigger and got myself a 28mm f2 AEG for a low price and great condition ($600). Did some quick tests and boy is this lens good. I am very amazed by the bokeh and close focus of the lens.

Currently own the following:
28mm f2 AEG
50mm f1.4 AEJ
85mm f1.4 AEG
135mm f2.8 AEJ

Thinking about picking up a 21mm f2.8 and a 35mm f1.4 and calling it a day...unless you guys have other recommendations ;)

Side note: Do you guys recommend any other adapters for EF other than leitax? Or is Leitax absolutely worth it? Not sure how I feel about the wiggle of my current Fotodiox adapter.

Leitax is the best by far. I have tried the cheap ones and there is no comparison. I usually test a lens with a cheap one, if I like it I order a Leitax.

Nice set.
Once you have the 21mm and 35mm you need the 60mm macro and the highly impressive (although a bit slow) 18mm f4
Leitax is the way to go.

The 21mm is probably the best lens in the range for me. Far better than the Milvus I recently (and foolishly) bought to replace it.

Once I got the 35mm 1.4 I found I very rarely used the 28mm except for close focusing stuff. It's spectacular on S35mm.

+1

Couldnt agree with you more.

The 35 comes out much more than the 28.

HI,
we are just testing the contax zeiss set I bought, I added leitax mount on the bottom for each,
problem is that when you use the follow focus, the lens zoom in and zoom out ??
this is 28 MMJ, 50MMj, 85 MMJ

is it normal ? it looks really curious

thanks for your answer

The front element moves forward and back when you focus, yes.

Using a nun's knickers is a helpful way to get around this with a mattebox.

Hope this helps!

Congrats on your set!

HI
what do you hear about nun's knickers? sorry my english is not good enough...
for me this is impossible to use this lens with follow focus if you can't change the focus without to have a zoom it's very hard to work with

thanks

Maybe Jean is not talking about the length, but what we call 'breathing'.

Jean, most photographic lenses are not perfectly constant in image size when focusing. Even some cine lenses show this behavior to a lesser extent. The best ones don't, but that's one of the reasons why they are so expensive that most of us would normally not own, but rent them. Photographers don't care for this.

In many cases it's less of a problem than one thinks, if the eye of the viewer is guided by the action in the shot. Where it is really disturbing, frame a bit looser and use a simple keyframed resizing in post – no problem with the oversampling of most RED cameras.

Hi
I already have nuns knicker and it Will not help.
With contax zeiss problem is when you make the focus, the lens zoom in for exemple for the 50mm mmj, after to zoom in it s like it will be a 55mm so focus only is not possible, this is the first time I saw this on a lens. I didn't have this problem on Robinson we used or cp2 or canon 24 70 L
Hoppe it s more clear
Thansk

You mean the front element moves back and forth as you focus, yes?
