Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

HI
there is someone here that use the 21mm f 2.8 MMJ ? is it very good ? because prize I found for this lens is around 1500 usd?
what's the good buying prize for this lens ? it seems to be amazing more expensive than 28mm, someone know why ??

last week I bought a 85 1.4 MMJ and a 50mm MMJ so I want a lens wide open but I am scared that 28mm f 2.8 won't be wide enough for me

thanks to let me know

What Paul said. The 21mm is arguably the best and one of the expensive Contax primes available. It's always been expensive, because it's always been GOOD.

Here's some pretty good reasons why the 21mm Distagon has retained it's value over the years. The fact that the front element does not rotate and that the length of the lens barrel does not change when focusing are extra benefits:

Hi guys,

I've been asking around for some advice on my next Contax purchase but still stuck on what to do. It seems everyone has a differing opinion so I'd like to open it up the forum and see what the group here thinks.

At the present I have the following:
Sigma 14mm f2.8
Canon 24-70mm f4 IS
Canon 70-200mm f4 IS
Contax Zeiss 50mm f1.4 AEG
Contax Zeiss 85mm f1.4 AEG
Contax Zeiss 135mm f2.8 MMJ

As you can see the primes are lacking a little towards the wide end and now that I have some disposable income coming way I'd like to start making some investments in lenses. In particular I've been looking at the 28mm and 35mm focal length.

Where I'm stuck is which to get first- 35mm f1.4 or 28mm f2? I can't do both as that would be out of my budget so I'm trying to figure out which absolutely needs to be purchased in it's fastest variant as opposed to getting a slower 2.8 version of it.

I think 28mm f2 because..."hollywood."
But then I also hear good things about the 35mm f1.4

ay ya yai...any help here would be great. Special shout out/thanks to Nick and the rest of the guys and gals on here for making the best source of contax info on the web. I'm super appreciative of this.

Javier .. There is no bad purchase in the lenses that you are looking to add. Which lens are you most likely to use the most right away. Not sure what camera you are shooting on. Don't forget the 25mm. I love that lens as well. The 28mm Hollywood is a beautiful piece of glass. Buy the lens you will use tomorrow. Lots of time to pick up the others.

HI
here is the contax set I bought this last days,
85 f1.4 MMJ
50 f 1.4 MMJ
28 f 1.8 MMJ

I have decliked the 85 and 50 this morning, this is pretty easy to do no need to ask it do Duclos, you only need a good screw driver ;)

Problem is that the 28mm screw are locked with glue so I destroyed 3 screw head and only one was realy easy to remove.
Someone know how to remove this screw? any idea ?
thanks

The screw thing, which David from Leitax warns about is the main reason I sent mine to Duclos. But also because after declicking you may need the proper greasing for the aperture ring.

I recently installed Leitax on several AEs, who's screws were also stuck (I nearly stripped one of them). The key for me was to seat the screwdriver in the head, and then use something (I used the handle of another screwdriver) to tap the top of the screwdriver with *just* enough force to break the bond of the old glue (make sure everything remains perfectly vertical and be careful!)

Hi.
When i collected and de-clicked my contax set (after stumbling over this amazing thread), I also had a few screws that were stuck, and I picked up an extremely helpful tip somewhere deep inside the interwebs: Use a soldering iron to heat the tip of the screw first. When the screw is heated to a different temperature than the rest of the metal, it expands, and loosens. Using this tip, I managed to remove two screws I accidentally stripped the threads of, by just applying pressure downwards with a screwdriver after loosening. Now I heat every single small screw I come across, and I have never had a stuck one since! Highly recommended!

Excited to say I am dusting off the Contax AE set in 2 weeks to shoot a feature with. Haven't used them in a while and just had them tuned up at Duclous. Looking forward to playing with them again. Even went and picked up an 18 to fill out the set.

NICE!!

Yeah Nick, even cooler is I got a Leitax EF mount for my Alexa so will be using the Contax glass on that camera for the first time. Look forward to posting some frames.

Nicely done! Looking forward to it!!

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but I'm selling a 16mm Zeiss T/2.4 Super 35mm format lens in Arri Std mount, which would cut nicely with any set of Contax primes.
The glass is clean and the mechanics works fine, so this is a great lens for a rehousing or cinemod.
Current bid is only 599USD and the auction finishes in less than 23 hours: http://www.ebay.es/itm/152195751046?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
Will ship worldwide. PM with questions.
