Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Hey gang, here's another campaign we banged out this spring. Shot on Epic MX.

I wrote/directed, and oversaw post.

Jake Blackstone graded our dailies - as always.

Our shoot was 100% BTS (Behind the Scenes) - not as sophisticated as other projects, but still fun.

We shot down and dirty on Epic MX and Scarlet MX, with Contax Zooms most of the time (28-85, 80-200).

Majority of interviews are Contax AEG 135 f2 and Contax MM 180 2.8 (all shot down a hallway at production company HQ).

A lot of night B-Roll was 135 f2 as well.

No filtration.

"I Love You But I Lied" is one of the most popular shows in Netherlands right now. This is first US version. The show is 100% cray cray!

Enjoy!

Hey Lads,

Few seconds from an ad I shot last week.
Contax 50mm 1.4 on a matebones booster and BMCC 2.5.
I know it is not a RED but at least the lens correlates with the theme here.

I am really getting to love those lenses. You can do artsy and can do "commercial" with one set of lenses. How amazing.

Gosh you do promos well Nick. Stellar. Loved the interviews which were in an entirely different league than the actual show selects...but that's to be expected when someone as experienced as you takes the helm. :-)

Patrick, this looks GREAT!!!! Are you using a gimbal or steadycam? Love the moment. And the entire sequence feels so ohh-la-la stylish. LOVE IT!!!

Figured I'd post this FS lens set here since it's Contax related:http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...ns-set-all-cine-modded-and-w-Leitax-EF-mounts

Hey Brian, I saw these for sale, and have to say...looks like a pretty stellar kit!!

Chris you are way too kind. But yeah, I freakin love promo! Been doing it for 12 years!!! It's such a small industry too.

I'm so envious of you guys that do agency and commercial work, seems so glamorous...but I have to admit...promo can be a lot of fun too!

And my clients are great - super fun peeps. I'm probably very lucky in that regard...

Gritty short shot on Contax

Gritty short shot on Contax

Last weekend saw me and a bunch of willing volunteers stuck in a hot, sweaty disused shoplot shooting my latest short. Contax Zeiss primes throughout, mostly the MM 25 because it just has that nice cinematic quality and flares like Jimmy Page's trousers. I also used the 35mm f1.4 for a slomo shot where I needed the extra light, and the Tokina 11-16 for the low angle shot.

Here are some ungraded stills, straight from RedCine, with white balance, DragonColor2 and RG4 applied. After running some tests through Resolve I'm going to stick with RG4 as the base grade, and only tweak from there. Most shots rated at 800 ISO. The Dragon noise looks very grain-like and really adds to the gritty look in this case. Lighting budget was $60, so we used par-cans and a couple of 1K halogen worklights that I have in the back of the truck. I let the light sources be seen as I figured that an underground boxing ring, like me, uses the cheapest lights it can find. :-)

Hey Nick,

Thanks for your kind words.
I am using the old dog GlideCam HD4000 handheld without the brace.
Works very nicely with the BMCC form factor.

Just received a near mint 180 2.8 AEG.

My set is now: Macro 60mm, 180 (both AEG) and 28mm 2.8 MMJ.

Not sure what I should make my next purchase.

Haha. Awesome. I think I've asked you same question before, yes? Love your stuff!

Well, a 35 is probably in order. Maybe the 35 2.8? Or 35 1.4? If you don't need speed, 35-70 or 28-85 could fill out your set really nicely. Also maybe consider the 50 1.4 or 50 1.7?

The 135 2.8 is always affordable too, and terrific!

And I happen to know someone with a nice 35mm f2.8 for sale.... :)

My 35mm 1.4 AEG just arrived and I am loving it. Also purchased another 85 1.4. Aeg this time. Sexy ninja stars everywhere so I can pretend to people I am shooting on Cookes :)

I've been playing with Leica R recently and built a small set but to be honest I find myself missing and coming back to the Contax look/feel. Really love their 60mm macro and the v1 19mm f2.8 especially but part of me is thinking maybe I should sell it all off and just invest in the best Contax gear.

Dito.

I have 3 60mm macro lenses, a Nikon, a Leica R, and a Contax AEG, my favorite is the Contax, my less favorite is the Leica.

I am looking for a contax 35mm f2.8 pc Distagon. and 100-300 zoom. Must be 8+ or above.

Hey Liam,

I think it is time for those fifties now :)
Either one does magical things but the 1.4 is worth the extra 2 bills IMO.

Well actually. I want to get all of the ones you've just outlined, as for the very next purchase I've been thinking either 85 1.4 AEG or the 35-70, but I can't seem to find the AEG version. Rare?
