  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Anyone used a converted Contax N 17-35/2.8? Conversion looks like it is $900 and the lens maybe $1500 on ebay = $2400. I guess if it has that much more punch maybe worth considering selling the Canon 16-35 I have.

I've considered this myself. The filter thread is quite large fyi.

Time to go searching for samples online. I do find the 16-35 is one of the lenses I can't give up on the 5D. But I do like the rendering of the Zeiss lenses.

I run and gun on 77mm threads, so having a lens out of this range would be a pain for me. But no arguing how good this zoom is. One day...perhaps.

The C/Y Adapter didn't arrive yet, but I had a MD adapter for my Rokkors lying around and went out into the cold. I like what this camera does! I'm under the impression that the excellent resolution (probably well beyond what these older lenses can do) is just truly registering their full character in all detail. At least that's how I'd try to describe it.

Here is one example from a 85mm Minolta Varisoft at f4 (no softness):

I'll be back when I can try the Contax glass…

A few grabs from last weekend's shoot at a local race track. A short film afollowing 3 guys taking their Race licence tests. 4K WS with some 3k WS too. I find myself hating 16:9 as an aspect ratio now :)

Fence shots 35mm f2.8 and the other two are the 28-85mm.

I'm torn at the moment whether to go for a Hollywood 28mm or to get the Sigma 18-35, seeing as I need a 21mm as well.

I'm trying to own/take out fewer lenses and I think the 28 f2 would pretty much be my go-to focal length and maybe I should just concentrate on the bestest quality and rendition I can get with good build quality and decent focus throw.

Or maybe I should be sensible and get the all-rounder that covers that focal length and gets great write-ups and compromise on the shortcomings.

The obvious answer is to get both :)

But I'm also gonna be buying this new Shoot35 Follow Focus this month so that's out of the picture.

I empathise. Having a 25mm means that a 28mm would be overkill, so until I can find some spare cash I'm making do with the Sigma ART 35mm f1.4, which intercuts nicely. The zooms are going to have to wait a bit longer, but I don't do much run'n'gun so I'm not in a rush. But I also need a parallinx and a wireless follow focus, so it's a case of priorities.

This is a tough one, as the 28 2.8 MM is so good as well. The Sigma 18-35 is definitely an impressive piece of glass. Has too much distortion at 18 for my taste, but otherwise good. That said, the bokeh and feel of the Hollywood I adore. It's like a "mini" version of the 35 1.4. Ooozes character. Tough choice!
