Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Just chiming in here to thank Nick for starting this mammoth thread. It's cost me a lot in the last few months to build up a set (mostly AEs), but on Saturday I got a chance to put my 85mm f1.4, 25mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4 to use shooting my directorial debut. I also used the Sigma ART 35mm, which intercuts nicely. Beautiful and creamy, yet with pin sharp detail, with a nice roll off to overexposure that makes my Canon L primes look quite primitive by comparison.

We shot in daylight using natural light, with Formatt Circular Pola and IRND filters in the mattebox to soak up the tropical sunshine. Here are some production skills, the only colour adjustment being a Fuji film LUT straight out of Resolve and the parade stretched out to correct levels.

There are still a few more to collect (a 35mm, 28mm and the zooms), and I'm looking forward to this thread costing me even more in the future. :-)

Thanks, Nick.

Looking great Paul! Can't wait to see more!!!

Hey guys, I'm worried about the filter threads, do you all use the original step-up rings? Or "custom made"? I like the idea of getting the Cordvision cine rings and caps... I read somewhere that Nick glued the step-up rings, is that so?

cheers.

I think my question got lost in the last page. So I'm Up'ing it.

I use Cordvision rings on all mine, so they're all 77mm. I prefer the front caps from RP lens though. They're more snug than the Cordvision front caps.

+1 a million times.

Best combo for caps is yes.....CORDVISION rings....plus RP lens caps....SUPER SNUG.

Brian, Nick,
are the rplens caps like the arri arriflex duclos sells?
if not, do you guys have some pics of the caps? ;)
many thanks!!!!!

No, the caps are not the same. I tried the caps you mentioned, as well as others, and RP lens' caps were the best fit. They're just generic looking black caps but they really hug the front of the lens. I don't have any pics on hand of those caps. I'm away from my lenses at the moment or I'd take a quick pic to post. If Nick hasn't put one up by the next time I come on reduser tomorrow then I'll put one up.

Im stuck in edit and cant post a pic right now, but put it this way...I've ordered close to 50 of these caps from Peter at RP.

For me, they are MUCH SNUGGER than Duclos's Arriflex caps (which look cool, but slip off easily). The RP caps are very tight, and keep out dust, etc extremely well. Also makes it easier to grab lenses out of the case...in case you accidentally grab from the cap....they are so snug they pose no risk of slippage...whereas most other caps are pretty loosey goosey. Not the RPs.

They + Cordvision rings have been huge for me.

Hi all,
here is a little job I did the last summer for my favorite cook in Tuscany ;-)
Just flyed around an afternoon during 3 hours with an Epic and 5 CZ Contax AE.
Hope you'll enjoy.

Interesting combo indeed... I'm getting all the numbers in checking what's better, I asked for a quote over at Du-All as well for a full cine conversion.

Have any of you guys tried alternate (cheap) focus gears?

Also, I was thinking of getting the 21mm, but damm, it's more expensive then the 21mm ZE/ZF at this point on Ebay...

I've recently built a set of Contax lenses. They all have Leitax mounts and were declicked by a local camera workshop - a task that tried my patience greatly while we finally got the aperture adjustment tension right. To finish them off I've fitted these focusing rings.

When they arrived I was pleased to find that they are a relatively soft and pliant material that sticks well to the lens barrel. So I put them on as tight as I could and trimmed the excess belt and they work beautifully. The only lens they won't work on is the 60mm macro because it's focus throw is more than 300°

I liked them so much that I ordered another 15 yesterday for all my other lenses.
