  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

My answer to everything :)

Having done a bunch of these, I'd agree with Ben, to a point...sometimes it goes really smoothly and easily...but then there are those lenses where the screws just won't come out, no matter what you try...that's where specialized tools and experience really come into play.

From what I understand, the real issue is going back to the Contax mount... not the Leitax mount itself... no?

Hey David, I'd recommend having a 50mm, and a 135mm (both are relatively affordable, and very useful to have...especially a 50m).

Hope this helps.

I'd hope the Zoom would cover my needs for a 35mm and a 50mm, at least for now, I'll probably get them both later on. The thing is: I shot Super35 sensors about once a month or so, may it be Red, Alexa or Sony F's. And quite often Canon 5Ds and few times C300/100... but I'm about to purchase a BMCC (only one I can afford at the moment) and for it, a Speed Booster, making the 18mm=29mm, 25mm=40mm and so on, that's why I wasn't thinking about going over 85mm, but you're right, I shall look into a 135mm 2.8... but not sure about the 50mm at this point... well, I do use a 50mm a lot when I shoot with the 5D, but I'd use the 60mm Macro instead, at least for now, no?

Have you tried out the special anniversary lenses? 85mm 1.2, 55 1.2 and 135 2?

And yes, it's helping a lot!

Not sure if you can use a speedbooster with these. Is there a speedboster for EOS lenses on BMCC? I'm not uptodate on that. Maybe there is. I guess there is Contax to M43 speedbooster, so I suppose you can use those.

The anniversary lenses are crazy expensive. I don't take them seriously. Even the 135 f2 Anniversary is very expensive. I did find a 135 F2 non anniversary, and am perfectly happy with it.

That's precisely why I wanted to switch mounts, there's no EOS to M43 adapter yet for some odd reason...

So you don't think the 60mm replaces te 50mm? Because of weight?

I've found it really hit and miss trying to remove the mounts for Leitax conversion. Once the screws are out it is easy.
I had to take three lenses to a specialist who for some reason drilled out both the screws and the threads! Needless to say it was difficult to get the eos mount on securely. David was able to send me some slightly longer screws which rectified the situation, but I had some nervous days with useless lenses.

The 60mm is two stops slower than the 50. I like being able to shoot at least at an f2 if I need to.

Worst case why not get a 50 1.7 MM? Even wide open this lens is pretty sharp (sharper than the 50 1.4).

Yeah that's why I had Peter at RP lens do mine. Didn't want to deal with the hassle of dissembling the backs of all my lenses!

Hey guys, so was playing with the 100-300 last night...and WOW...I realized something...important. The close-focusing on this lens is SICK!!!! As opposed to most 300mm's that can't focus any closer than 10 feet (the 300 f4 min focus is 3.5m...which is 11.5 feet...for ex)..this bad boy has a min focus of 1.5 meters!!!!! Which is 4 feet 11 inches!!! It's a shallow depth of field monster!!!

I was mucking about last night and realized I wasn't across the living room focusing (as I am normally with 300's)

Instead I was almost on top of my test subjects...which on a 300mm is bonkers.

Put it this way. The 180 2.8 has a floating element to help it with close focusing, and IT focuses at 1.5 meters. This bad boy focuses just as close...but at 300mm!!!!

Me loves the 100-300. Paired with the 28-85, these guys are WOW in a bottle.

I also love paring the 35-70 and the 80-200, for their constant apertures.

Getting the 35-135 back from RP lens soon. Can't wait to put that through it's paces!!

Yeah this lens is great for filming fast flying insect.

Hey guys, I'm worried about the filter threads, do you all use the original step-up rings? Or "custom made"? I like the idea of getting the Cordvision cine rings and caps... I read somewhere that Nick glued the step-up rings, is that so?

cheers.

Just chiming in here to thank Nick for starting this mammoth thread. It's cost me a lot in the last few months to build up a set (mostly AEs), but on Saturday I got a chance to put my 85mm f1.4, 25mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.4 to use shooting my directorial debut. I also used the Sigma ART 35mm, which intercuts nicely. Beautiful and creamy, yet with pin sharp detail, with a nice roll off to overexposure that makes my Canon L primes look quite primitive by comparison.

We shot in daylight using natural light, with Formatt Circular Pola and IRND filters in the mattebox to soak up the tropical sunshine. Here are some production skills, the only colour adjustment being a Fuji film LUT straight out of Resolve and the parade stretched out to correct levels.

There are still a few more to collect (a 35mm, 28mm and the zooms), and I'm looking forward to this thread costing me even more in the future. :)

Thanks, Nick.
