Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

I'm remembering playing with my 60mm with an added Mutar 2X

I wish I had that possibillity on my Silk project.
I guess you were using the V1 of the Mutar.
I have the V2 wich isn't compatible with the 60 AE.
Cheers

I did a quick shoot with some friends the other day hitting a rope swing in Whistler. Shot mostly with contax 35-70, 25 2.8 and some canon 70-300L and rokinon 8mm fish.

Yeah Brandon great job. The rolloffs and flares look fantastic. Great piece!

I just had to hop on here and say:

If someone was looking to get into Contax, they should just buy the 28 f2.8 and the 80-200 f4. You can shoot almost anything with those two lenses (light permitting). Obviously add more to it when you can, but... affordable awesome place to start.

I have to say the 28-85 is my standard lens now and I do about 90% of my work with it, and then tend to end up with either the 85 1.4 or the 25mm for flavour.

I really need to check out the longer zoom.

The 80-200 is simply awesome. It's because of you I just ordered the 28-85, maybe I can peer pressure you into the 80-200!

Is re-greasing of the focusing ring really possible on contax lenses? Or is it not really worth the effort/cost? What places service contax lenses in this manner?

of course! it should be no more than 30eur/40bucks and a normally skilled repairman should do it fine! def do it if the ring is stiff or loose...
oh wow thats great to hear! Who would I be able to sent it to do that? I know nobody local who could do this

I don't know if it makes sense financially for just 1 lens with shipping 'n all but try duclos or rplens but in my experience local repairmen are usually cheaper...

it depends on the lens!

If it's a 35mm 1.4 or a 21mm 2.8...or a 135 2... :emote_happyhappy:

Guys I'm interested in the type of setups you use when shooting and whether you stay light or fully 'rig up' and what NDs etc you use.

I ask because recently I've been using a lightweight 4x4" mattebox and it adds so much time to every lens change and setup that more and more I find myself ditching it by the end of the day and just using a Lee filter adapter hold and Lee stills grads and the like, or just using Tiffen screw-in IRND filters.

I've been going as light as I can when using contax lenses. Screw-in ND and UV filters, only using a mattebox when I need the shade.

The 80-200 is an AWESOME lens, I love it. For the price ($250??!!!!), it's almost impossible to beat.

The 100-300 is much more expensive ($900) and slower, but the extra range is exciting. It's also insanely sharp as it's made with LOW DISPERSION glass (ie APO glass). A brilliant performer.

You can't go wrong with either.

Right on, Nick!

Maybe someday I will look for a 100-300. For now my recomendation for people looking to test the water was based a lot on price. I was have a great day where I was just shooting the 28 2.8 or the 80-200 F4 and that's it. for the price of the 100-300 you could get the 28, 50, and 80-200 as a starter set, lol.

God I love this line of lenses!

I was about to comment in the "Poor Mans Fujinon 19-90" thread about the 28-85, which mine arrives today, but you beat me to it!

My next purchase may actually be the sigma 18-35 1.8 you round out all those wider needs. I am so curious how it cuts with the contax line, though I anticipate needing to pre build some looks to match in post.

I need to post some of my frame grabs on here soon...

Hey guys, there's a MINT 28 2.8 MM at B&H right now. These are very hard to find. Improved over the 28 AE, and rivals the famous "Hollywood" for performance.
Apart the vanished ninja stars what are the other improvement?

Another shot from last night @300. Using FB for hosting and their compression automation is an oversharpening nightmare.

I found in some circonstencies that this zoom was too sharp for my taste.
When Nick says it desolve metal and melt faces he's almost not kiding.
