Contax Zeiss Survival Guide

Does anyone have any experience with the 70-210 3.5 ? vs 80-200 ?
Any information would be greatly appreciated .

Thank you in advance.

Thank you in advance.

The 70-210 is much older, and more expensive. The 80-200 is newer, much more affordable, and generally what I always recommend. The 80-200 is superb.

The 70-210 is fine, but the 80-200 appears on paper not only to be better, but also much better bang for buck.

Thank you for your knowledge Nick . I will be putting a set together and have absorbed everyones words with gratitude.

Hello Contax users!

Firsttime poster here from Sweden and an owner of some wonderful contax glass.

I have a question about the 28mm f2 Hollywood.
I was doing some lens flare test's and found this little "quirk" with my 28mm that made it stand out from the others.
While pulling focus and having a lightsource within the frame, the flares rotates with the way I pull focus.

Wondering if this have something to do with the floating elements, as the front glass seems to rotate with the focus pulling.
Found this to be quite a wonderful little effect that looked very nice but I can think of several times were I do not want this effect.

Thanks in advance for all reply's.
Looking forward to see more material and insight from you guys in this thread.
Have a good one!

I've never noticed that personally, but your theory about the floating element sounds reasonable!

Any news about your new GUIDE for Contax lenses ?

Haha - you remembered! How about this...why don't I try and get it done by NAB? I'm trying to write about EVERY Contax lens ever made. So I haven't made it easy for myself!!

I'll keep you posted.

thanks for checking in!

@Niklas:

I never noticed, but if the sun comes out today I'll give it a try. Sounds a bit strange anyway – how should a piece of glass with axial symmetry rotate the flare?

I own the following contax lenses.

28mm f/2 AEG
35mm f/1.4 AEG
35mm f/2.8 AEG
50mm f/1.7 MMJ
85mm f/1.4 AEG
135mm f/2.8 AEJ

And the 28mm is the only one that behaves like this, so I figured it had something to do with the floating elements.
As I can't seem to find anything that seems to be broken with it, all gears seems to run smooth and the glas seems crisp and clear.
It's mainly noticeable with small and harsh lightsources aimed straight towards the lens. Certain light rays seems to fragment and spin alongside with the focuspulling.
I'd be very interested in what you come up with your copy.

Well, it could be some structure at the rim of the floating elements then. I'll go testing on Friday.

Hey Lads,

Did some shooting yesterday and here is a snapshot.
BMCC plus 28mm 2.8 Contax on a metabones booster.

Contax glass feels good on the blackmagics.
I know it is kinda offtopic since we are on the RED user forum but shots are shots :)

thanks.

Music video shot for a collegiate a cappella group with BMPCC, SLR Magic 12mm T1.6, Contax Zeiss 28mm f2, 50mm f1.4 and 85mm f1.4:

Radioactive/Dil Se Medley

Is this one of the greatest thing ever posted on this thread?? Acapella?! Multiple languages? Apocalyltic storylines? Glee meets Pitch Perfect meets Mortal Kombat??

Dude...Jeff...Im literally clapping and giving you a standing ovation right now!!

AWESOME JOB!!!!

So fun!!

Looks great! Are you using a gimbal? Love her styling too!

Yes its Reduser, but we often discuss lots of cameras on this thread...no worries!

@ Niklas.
Regarding the 28mm f2.0 I can confirm that I see a bit of movement in the sun stars (yes, it's sunny Easter day today) when focusing.
But the main flare stays fixed in place like with all my other lenses.

Is that what you mentioned? Or could it be that you see a reflection of the lettering on the front ring on the filter threads? Yes, the front glass is turning on this one, so you can't use polarizers without a matte box.

Has any of you got the chance to compare the 28-85 Contax to a Vivitar 28-90?
