  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Contagion- Soderbergh...

I LOVE RED!!!!!! But here this. If it is good enough to use at such a level with investors money involve. why do the rest of us have to wait so long.

No camera will ever be perfect. While sony was king with all there new this and that, Canon brought out a DSLR that every man on the planet could afford and triple there profits. Next we here Arri has a breakthrough and if enough competitors go with it we all will be force to buy in just to survive.

Please sell us the camera cause when consumers cant afford to buy our videos our toys become useless. Now is the time mark my words by the time mass epics come our only a few will be able to afford them. Most people will just rent them. US economy is falling and everyone else's economy sadly hangs on it.

Please release now. It is good enough

why the newest gear isn't released all at once

why the newest gear isn't released all at once

If Red is putting their newest hardware into a big production, I'm sure they can support that production. But consider, if they have a camera that turns out to need an improved X, Y, and Z before it really works as intended in every condition. Maybe unlikely, but it's possible :-). So what then?

Not too hard to fix if there are only 20 in the field. Very expensive to do when there are 500 cameras in the field from Amsterdam to Uttar Pradesh, and every DP and AC and 2nd AC are writing in forums how the new gear has a poor X, Y and Z and it takes 2 weeks to ship the camera back and customs wants more paperwork and we've lost bookings...

Steven Soderbergh started shooting Ché 3 months before we sold the 1st RED ONE cameras. He loved it. But we also took a lot of crap for selling cameras that weren't finished. We learned a ton from Steven's experience. People still to this day think that a RED ONE overheats because of my post the 1st day Ché began. :-)

Tattoos will not have all features enabled... and they will get plenty of firmware upgrades. Some customers can handle this and some can't. Truth is we can't guess and don't want to handhold a ton of customers through the process again. The battle testing that Tattoo cameras will get in the most demanding situations will help all EPIC customers. Steven is willing to fight through the process. He has proven that over and over again. His cameras will be rolling every day. We need that. So do all future EPIC owners.

This is the second post that i have seen about a person saying that they should release the camaras already!!! i can understand their frustration and also share it!! But this is the time where its really important to take a step back and let the geniuses do their jobs so that later on we dont have to pay for it!!! everyday i come to this forum to check if there are any news about the epic's release date! it got to the point that im gonna buy a Red one just so i can start shooting some projects!! its been 4 weeks since i finished film school at NYFA in new york city!!! AND ITS MAKING ME CRAZY NOT SHOOTING ANYTHING!!! sorry for the frustration i just wanted to share!! On a good note! *** KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK RED***

Jim, as good as it is hear about this...and it's great and I also fully agree about getting it 'battle' ready before it hits the market i have one big concern.
Is there going to be any shortfall's in accessories that you have announced. This was and still is crippling to RED One owners as you STILL cannot buy a drive or an EVF for a lot of people. I and more so others went through serious pains with shortages and waits from the early days of rollouts of the 'One' with no where near enough accessories to cover yourselves with the cameras you sold. From backorders to items just not turning up with shipped cameras it was very difficult and still is for many. Frankly it's a very precarious scenario for prospective owners.
Respectfully in my opinion i seriously think that this HAS to be a different case when EPIC rolls out and even if it meant holding back the amount of EPICS to be rolled out at one time to make sure all orders are complete with enough necessary extras and with excess in your supplies that is fine. SSD cards for example, if i get three 128gb cards and i land a big job and need another 10, or if they were damaged or stolen it is no use to me being told...sorry, they are on backorder and it could very well be months! If you make essential components exclusive to RED and no additional third party suppliers you MUST have enough for demand.

Great to hear Tattoo is in the wild now.
Soderbergs team is one of the best teams to provide deep feedback to the process and will hopefully make the public release more efficient and solid.

Keep on Truckin'

Sure - but at the same time you also got a hell of a lot of valuable feedback from customers that understood your situation and embraced the camera despite all the bugs and peculiarities. I wish it was possible to do that again with EPIC, but I also understand where you're coming from. I'm just glad I was there to experience it for the RED ONE and that I'll be able to tell my kids that I was there at the turning point for digital cinema.

Many of us are grateful for what you've not only done with the one camera you've made so far - but more so what you've done to and for the entire industry. I for one believe you've put more people to work than you have employed at RED.

Awesome news. And since someone brought up Crossing the Line, will we ever be able to see the entire film online? It's been like 3 years...

In worst case scenario that the EPIC stops working in the middle of a shoot, I bet he'll have several RedOnes as back up. ;-)

For Ché, SS had two RED ONE prototypes at the bottom of a ravine in Spain with Benicio del Toro and 300 extras ready to shoot the 1st day. It was 100+ degrees and the CF card started working (for the 1st time ever) 30 minutes before the 1st take. There were no backup cameras there. There were no backup cameras at the hotel. There was no camera backup plan at all. SS never flinched.

Now maybe you'll understand why we like him so much... :-)
