  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

"Contagion"... IMAX.

We thought Steven might use EPIC to finish, but it was all RED ONE MX.

Jim

You are correct. I just tend to read 'MX' as red one MX. Maybe I read what he posted the wrong way.

I specifically asked him how much of the film was shot on the MX, and how much on the EPIC. To which, everyone knows the reply.

Jed... the EPIC's were having issues, so the original plan was to mix the footage between the Red One MX during the EPIC's downtime, but obviously that never happened.

The IMDB information was added before Jim ever confirmed that it was an MX production... back when everyone was still under the assumption scenes were filmed with the EPIC.

EDIT: Well, there you have it from Jim himself.

I thought that Imax Digital was only 2K. So to see it in 4K, you'd need to see it on one of the giant Imax film projector theaters right? (Such as Irvine or Ontario)

Yep, D-IMAX uses dual 2K DLP projection systems. Aside from DLP/Sony 4K systems, 15/65mm is the only way to see the film in 4K.

That being said, the MX looked gorgeous on IMAX's DLP systems, so don't be afraid to see it in D-IMAX.

Can someone confirm Irvine Imax will have the film in 4k? If so, I'm soooooooooooo there this week.

Rave 18 at Howard Hughes pkwy has a real imax with a good sound system

Now I have to hunt down a [real] IMAX theater out here! None of the Liemax nonsense.

any imax 4k on LA area?

is there any website with an official list of theaters that have 4k projects and are in fact displaying films in 4k when the film is getting released theatrically in 4k? I know there are a lot of theaters with 4k projectors but still just project 2k off of them. which is a big waste. I have yet to have the honor of seeing anything projected or presented in 4k, and would love to find out where I can finally see a polished film presented the way it should...

Jim didn't say the film was being shown in 4k, just that it was finished in 4k. Since the film is feature length, I can't imagine that it would be printed to IMAX 70mm film from the 4k source as that would be the only way to see a full 4k res film in IMAX at this point. IMAX digital (in both traditional venues and IMAX Experience) are dual projector 2k systems where the dual projection part is meant to increase brightness in 3D and traditional 2D presentations by about 50%. I can't find any info on a 4k IMAX digital anywhere. If one does exist, I'm sure it's a testbed and I don't know how you would find out where it is. That's assuming the files are even delivered to the venues in 4k. Creating the D-Cinema and IMAX masters is a step after traditional "finishing" so who knows what resolution was actually delivered to cinemas...

That said, I thought the film translated really well to the large format. Titles destroy the illusion of high pixel count on IMAX digital presentations, but the image itself stands up pretty well. I have no 4k presentation reference though. I've never been to any theater with 4k, so take my words worth a grain of salt on that account.

There are a few IMAX 15/70 film prints playing. Navy Pier in Chicago and IMAX, Palisades Center in Nyack NY. There are probably a few more. I have been told that IMAX has begun installing 4K projectors at some digital locations. I don't know where or how many, but they are moving in that direction. 2K for IMAX was a stepping stone.

According to the IMAX website, it looks like Imax Digital only. Chris is right - it does seem unlikely that they would print IMAX 70mm film prints from the 4K finish. What is significant is the 4K finish, whereas Social Network and others were finished in 2K. It's the next step, and it makes Contagon ready for the transition to 4K.

"The IMAX release will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience with proprietary IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX’s customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make you feel as if you are in the movie."

IMAX's DMR process applies to digital and film 15/70 releases. The digital part of DMR just means that images go through a computer before being output to IMAX film or to IMAX's digital format.

Navy Pier IMAX plays film and Navy Pier is playing Contagion. Some film prints have been made.

I just called Navy Pier IMAX and Contagion is showing on film there. I was wrong on that one. So go to Chicago to see it in the highest res... if you want to brave the populated area. Hahaha.
