  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Connector orientation.

I wonder who chose the angle of the Drive connector.
Seems like 1 o'clock was a bad choise:

Now how do I plug in my power plug :-(

Im wondering if it's soldered to a PCB or its mounted on the chassies. I would like to turn it a few degrees to clear the power connector.

The straight plug do work of course, but I just love angled connectors...

Anders,

Yes, It looks like bad placement...thanks for the heads up!

Would loosing the right angle connector in place of a straight connector work?

Dave

The normal drive cable has one angled and one straight connector.
In some configurations you'd want to minimize the length of the package, and as the straight plug occupy around 2.5" of space for the plug and cable relief, the angled end would come in handy.

If the connector was in a 11 o' clock orientation you could fit both

I'm not recommending this, as it would obviously void your warranty... but LEMO connectors are easy to reclock from the inside without replacing parts. If there's enough slack on the wires inside, RED should be able to pop the back off for you, turn the connector to a reasonable position and close it up [even if it costs a few bucks].

So, RED... :)

The only bad choice here was when you plugged your cable in backwards, that's all.

Kidding aside, that's the only way Lemo makes them, but we are seeing if we can get custom keyed right angles out of them, because like you, I love my right angles too :)

Don't worry Brook, I'm not about to crack it open.......yet :-)

I strongly recommend you avoid brooks suggestion here... Not only will that not work ( key Is part of the mould ) but your camera warranty will go bye bye.

Anders,

I initially experienced the same situation you described/pictured. The solution was easy: de-mount the RED Drive from the RED Cradle, flip the RED Drive around 180 degrees, then re-mount it in the cradle - not vertically for an upside down mount, but still keeping the RED logo button on top of the drive facing up, simply turn the drive around 180 degrees to the other side and re-mount it in the cradle. The drive cable then mounts easily with the L end into the bottom of the drive (with its cable end facing the camera), and the straight end going into the camera bus.

Don't feel bad - that situation had me scratching my head initially too - until I applied the solution above.

Thanks Gibby, but thats not what I'm seeking :-(

What I want is being able to mount angled plugs on the RED body in both the drive and power connectors like this:
drive3.jpg

This will shorten the total camera lenght.

Currently the Drive connector is oriented so that the angled Plug covers the Power connector like this:

I understand that...

The drive cable comes with one straight end and one L end. With the angle of the drive LEMO bus orientation on the camera body, it is impossible to use the L end of the drive cable there, in tandem with the RED Cradle power cable, which only comes with a straight LEMO connector - thus the only solution for using an L end drive cable is as I described in my last post.

If RED offered a straight/connector + straight/connector cable, or as you stated, had different orientation than 1 o'clock on the camera drive receptacle, then you could use the L end there in tandem with a straight end power cable.

Edit: I see. In a quick read of the thread, I just assumed it was a drive orientation within the cradle problem, then using the straight end to the drive, and L to the camera won't work. If someone has the problem I mentioned, then my solution will help them. As per L connectors, like you, I also like L connectors in as many places as I can get them. I'd prefer L's on both ends of the drive cable, if the orientation of the camera bus was 11:00 o'clock instead of 1 o'clock.

I know what your saying anders... We are looking into it.

Jarred, I'm glad to hear that you are looking into possible fixes for this. Like Anders, and you, I'd like to have the option of right angle connectors on the back of the camera.

Having the same 1 o'clock key position on both certainly makes sense for the sake of consistency, but it does preclude the use of the present right angle end of the drive cable there.

For some reason the new generation cameras the drive connector has been rotated. take a look at the drive connector here on #23. Once the camera had an "X" stuck to it, the position changed... I've asked why this happened, no reply... also same with the Len/232 connector, position has changed, making the right angle cable sticking straight out the front.

The same applies to the Aux 12V lemos, the right angle connectors would block each other. We discussed this with some other users at a recent RED day and talked about it with Jon and Sean. They said that it would either require a new mould or modified Lemos. They said that they are taking this serious and will look for a solution, so I guess we just have to be patient.

But let's not forget about the Aux power ports!

I am looking for the same solution as Anders, to mount the battery lying flat on the bottom as close to the body as possible, actually sideways. This keeps the camera much shorter and would work excellently for shoulder work.

Oh, I see.
They just seem to have rotated it the wrong way :-(

Well, I hope Jarred can persuade the LEMO guys...
