  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

ok so I have my scarlet for a little while now but never could find this...

Every once and a while I run across something posted about the possibility of "recording the 5K look around" on a scarlet...

Thing is, I NEVER found a look around possibility for my scarlet. When I put it in 4K mode all i see is a 4K image, and no possibility of look around. Is there a setting Im missing?

Also in 5K mode, I can only see everything in 15fps (studdery) so obviously thats not what people are talking about...

Is this just something that was on an early build and then gotten rid of early on? So confused about this, please someone let me know.

The look around has changed locations in the menu in the latest builds. The look around shows the recording area of the entire sensor. Even when recording in 4K mode, when the look around is active, you can see the area around the recordable 4K area. The great thing is, the entire view of the whole sensor is piped through the HDI/SDI ports when you have this feature active. I believe it's in the recording setup.

woah, can someone point me to where it is exactly? this would be awesome to see

actually I just found it, and it actually shows even more than what 5K shows, thats pretty neat, anyone successfully record this signal with an external recorder, like a hyperdeck shuttle?

It doesn't show more than what 5K. 5K is the full resolution of the sensor. What you're seeing is a 5K frame, which is the "look around" and the recording area of 4K is shown inside that.

Can you post the steps you took to activate look around? Along with build# This will help other users find the look around option...Thanks.

I've done it with a Pix240. The 5k area of the sensor is down-rezzed to 1080p and piped out the HD-SDI or the HDMI. So, you get the 5K framing (which gives you advantages such as: shallower depth of field; all of your lenses are wider (i.e. have a smaller crop factor [1.3 versus 1.6, if memory serves me correctly]); a 'sharper' image), but you do not record 5K worth of pixels. Because the HD-SDI and HDMI are only capable of outputting 1080p. And the recorders mentioned in this thread are only capable of accepting and recording 1080p at the max.

If you just set the sensor to 5K on Scarlet, however, it will pipe out that same framing at 12fps, since the camera auto under-cranks to 12fps when you select that resolution. So, the only way to get that framing out those ports is to use the 4K settings with the 5K look-around activated.

Yes, you can record in 5k frame with an external recording - one of two main reasons why I bought the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. Basically, you set your camera to 4k or 4kHD with look around enabled and hit record on the Hyperdeck. You will get a nice 1080p 1.3x image.

Yep - look around looks good on Shuttle 2. But the UI displays the additional .3 sizing in a darkened border. Can't see any way to disable this - a bit frustrating for any period genuinely using this functionality.

With Build 3.3.15 it's - Settings/System/Recording/Enable Look Around.

Had trouble finding that myself one time too. Still find myself having to choose between the benefits of having the lookaround or the slightly larger image of the action area when using the 5" Touch LCD.

The 4K recording mode with look around enabled, allows to record
the full frame 5K 1.3x image through hdsdi or hdmi in 1080p.

the recording is triggered from camera to external recorder (Samurai that is) up until built 4.0.3.

No more triggering to recorder (Samurai that is) since build 4.0.6

We've tracked down the issue. It will be resolved in the next release.

Lookaround :
Settings > Display > Modes > Lookaround on/off

I am afraid something important is being missed here. If the Scarlet itself doesn't support capturing in 1080p, Full Sensor (which it doesn't), it will most likely be because the processing power for the downscaling is not available, right? That also means it wouldn't be available to downscale for the HDMI output. In other words, there must be some shortcut in use, for the monitor outputs, like line-skipping or just basic low-quality downscaling. All the stuff we bought our RED's to get rid of in the first place.

I might be wrong, but I would have a serious look at the HDMI output image quality before deciding on such a workflow.

Nope the SDI/HDMI downscale actually is very well interpolated, not to be compared with the 5D linskipping or such. It's actually when recorded in 10bit with redlogfilm very comparable with Alexa non raw footage... except, RED host a higher downsampling, allows for simultaneous 4k center frame raw capture and also gets the capture from a larger sensor...

Set your display to mode 'clean' rather than overlays. The darkened look-around region will not be shown.

So maybe this is also a good thread for asking: which recorder is the best choice? Samurai, hyperdeck shuttle etc. any oppinions?

that deserves it's own thread. They all offer something different, and very different prices.
