  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I'm about to make a purchasing decision of a new camera to supplement my existing stable of of cameras (2 x Gh5s + 1 EVA). I'm trying to get an understanding of the crop factor when shooting at 60fps and/or 50fps with the Komodo. I have searched the internet but can't get a clear answer.

I know that the Komodo is in beta but can someone share this information - it would be much appreciated!

Siddhu,

I believe that both 50FPS and 60 FPS are currently only available in 4K DCI and lower resolutions. The 4K crop of the Komodo from the Full 6K sensor appears as below from PHFX.com

I believe you can also get 50FPS at 5K WS as well, from

You're welcome Siddhu!

Edit:

I think there's only a DCI 5K mode in the Komodo, so I think 50FPS and 60FPS will only be in 4K and lower resolutions for now.

I believe you can get 50 fps in 6KWS as well ;-)

And I also believe if you shoot in ProRes you get 4K up to 60fps with full sensor readout ?

Bastien,

I thought 6K only went up to 40FPS? I forgot about ProRes, thanks for bringing that up. I think with all of the Beta firmware updates you never know what is what unless you own a Komodo.

According to Phil Grossman (here : https://ymcinema.com/2020/06/04/red-komodo-more-specs-revealed-and-real-world-footage/) you can do 6KWS at 48fps so I assume if your project base framerate is 25 you can round that up to 50. (remember : I'm not one of the lucky Komodo owners I'm waiting for the release version [and the money, as we all do ^^])

It's 5K FF @48fps. Not a WS. For a 24p timebase it's kind of the same, as 50fps for 25p. For overcrank it's negligible, you just have to look for the strobing. But for the normal speed at 25p timebase - it won't work at 5k. Say you have a sound sync and you're shooting a music video. Director wants to shoot at 50p so he can decide in post - whether he wants the slo-mo or not. 48p in this scenario won't work for 25p timebase.

At 4K FF you get 60p (59.94?). It's a tad bigger frame compared to 3K FF on MysteriumX sensors. At 5K FF the field of view is basically the same as 4K FF on Red Epic DSMC1. At 6K FF it's a tad bigger than super35mm 3-perf film frame.

In other words - at 4K the crop is noticable, but nothing too criminal, unless you're using a soft lens. Just pick a wider one.

You can get a clear answer yourself - if you directly compare the EVA1 FOV to Komodo one on Phil's Format Compare Tool.

This is not true. With ProRes, although you can get 4K with full sensor readout, you are still limited by the max frame rate of full sensor readout, which is 40FPS. Saving to ProRes doesn't magically increase frame rate capabilities. But since it isn't RAW, the 6K full sensor read can be sized down to 4K without cropping.

I think the Komodo owners have the latest up-to-date info on all of the available resolutions and frame rates.I think a continually updated list of features and the available resolutions and frame rates would be great, especially for myself and other non-owners of the Komodo.

Frame rates have been fixed for awhile now. Beta or not, I do not expect frame rates to change at all. I'm running the latest firmware and nothing has changed in regard to frame rates.
For ease, I'm listing max frame rate, rounded up to the integer.

6K - 17:9 full sensor - 40FPS
6K - 2.4:1 cropped sensor - 50FPS
6K 16:9 cropped sensor - 40FPS
5K - 17:9 cropped sensor - 48FPS
4K - 17:9 cropped sensor - 60FPS
2K - 17:9 cropped sensor - 120FPS

Switching to ProRes does not change ANY of these available frame rates. But every resolution from 4K to full sensor 6K can record as a ProRes 4K file.

I knew about all of the frame rates and resolutions you listed below except for the 6k WS at 50FPS. And not so much frame rates, but adding 5K and 4K WS options and maybe some anamorphic resolutions.

I pray to the RED Engineering gods that there is a 4-4.5K WS at 72 fps ... Eventually.

Ok. Sorry for the mistake.

I'm trying to figure out the crop factor with ProRes as well. Just got my Komodo today, and it looks like in order to get the higher FPS you need to crop the sensor, regardless of whether you are in ProRes or not. I was pretty bummed about this because on DSMC2 you could keep your higher FPS in ProRes while maintaining the full sensor. I hope they can find a way to squeeze this in with a future update.
