Everyone knows I have several personality disorders. That isn't a secret.

What may surprise you is that I have only read one book (cover to cover) in my life. True enough.

I glean, scan, pay attention, and keep my eyes and ears open... but I don't read books. Make no mistake, I can read. My attention span is just too short to read 100+ pages. I have the attention span of a ferret on crystal meth. I don't really do drugs of any kind. Well... blood pressure meds. And cigars.

The only book I ever read front to back, cover to cover... was The Hobbit. That was in 1969 while at USC.

How ironic.

Think about this for a minute. And you just might get how unbelievable this all is to me.

What a life...

The Hobbit. Shot on RED.

Hang in there boss, we need you to see this dream through...

BTW, I read The Hobbit in seventh grade and it took twice as long as most others in class. Still it had same meaning to all of us....

You want to know something funny Jim? I'm pretty well read, but the ONE book that I could never get past the first few pages was "The Hobbit." I've tried at least four times. But the map in the front and the talk about the Hobbit language would just kill me each time, LOL!

No books, yet you ended up receiving Honors at Entrance that year and coming out #2 in a class of 1300... I wouldn't call that luck... I would call that special. You might not read.. but it sure isn't due to a lack of Vision.

The Hobbit was my first adult book as well, and I read it in 5th grade... Followed that with the Lord of the Rings books, which are on a whole other literary level...

Well-deserved for someone who has changed the world.

I'll never forget the time you took with me in the booth at NAB 2008 helping me order my RED ONE before I knew who you were. You were patient and kind and recommended that I hold off ordering accessories to keep my required deposit low. That taught me a lot about customer service. Such class.

Your innovations and effort along with this incredible forum and community inspired me to create an app that is changing how the masses make movies on mobile phones. Never would have happened without RED. And now I answer support emails personally in part because a billionairre took the time with me when I didn't have a clue about any of this.

Sincerely,

Michael Zaletel

I have to admit I am the same way when it comes to reading books....WAY to damn ADHD I am haha. My mind prefers visual story telling, hence why I'm probably a filmmaker and not a writer....

Well... i admit to have read books. Plenty of them...

But

The Hobbit in Danish was kinda my 1st adult read on my own machine.

Had it as a birthypresent, and started off...

Jim we all have personality disorders it does not make you worth any less for only reading 1 book cover to cover my list is less the 6 books.
so I guess I trying to say is keep going strong and make kick ass stuff

All my best.

i only had one book read to me...

i only had one book read to me...

wow jim, your honesty is amazing. Truth be told, as a 70s baby, i had one book read to me as a young child... the hobit by my late father! I recall vividly the images and sounds it created. I've never read the books myself. Frankly because i don't want to replace those words i heard as a child. Keep doing the good work Jim!

Jim,

I was going to say something similarly as Jarred most elegantly put it, just on a different note of course as I didn't know about USC, and I can only just begin to imagine how grandiose this must be to you, and I congratulate you and I am very happy for you!

The Hobbit trilogy is something we all look forward to... ;)

It's not that Jim doesn't read books - it's that the only book he's ever read cover to cover has been turned into a movie, shot in a revolutionary way, on the camera that he brought to fruition. Truly incredible.

Jim is an amazingly humble guy given his tremendous ( and multiple ) successes.. many of them not made public.

Every once in awhile I find out about some other massive achievement that he has accomplished along the way and it blows my mind...

Someone needs to write a book... Seriously.

Me think you are very good at story telling.
That is why I did jump into the Red train. ;-)
