  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Completely honest

red shortcomings.

red shortcomings.

the 2k windowed idea is a resolution issue in a way since the nature of CMOS means that it's not a 'full' 2048 line resolution. the FOV changing is also kind of a bitch but can be dealt with. post is definitely in its infancy still. I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I need to bake 2 or 3 hours of footage a night. But I'm sure that will all change. (probaby as soon as NAB) besides that and the rolling shutter and IR issues which I am yet to see the effects of on my camera, the camera is pretty much the coolest thing ever and if it had a wallet it would most definitely say 'bad motherfucker' on it.

See, this is why we need a cross country by train experience for all high school students through this vast and diverse nation of ours....

canada is typically mountains forests and snow.

pardon? Travel much? you ever heard of the tundra? the arctic? b.c. rain? the plains of saskatchewan? the entire east coast? Holy shit son, maybe you shouldn't have skipped geography AND english class to do bong hits......

but if he didn't skip those classes to do bong hits...he wouldn't be canadian!

Speaking of Bong hits (you kill me Skip!), anyone catch the excellent CBC doc "The Prince of Pot"?

I love the CBC docs!

sander kamp;189202 Looking forward to your examples Andrew![/QUOTE said:
Thank you Sander, I can't wait either(heheh). I hope to share some good things with the collective here... I followed your lead and have a very experienced machinist ready to help me when solutions are needed. Thought I will still get SIM Video and ET gear to start off...

Stay cool Sander and I look forward to seeing into "your world".

Cheers,

Andrew

i know i know....but you're not supposed to then log on and write without thinking......ah the good old days eh skippy? I forget them like they were yesterday...

Hold up there, Evolve. I think I was miss understood, what I meant was that the whole mountains, forest, and snow thing was the perception of Canada. I mean, I just finished explaining that i am from a canadian desert. I was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, if you know a flatter prairie let me know. I have lived on Vancouver Island, a very beautiful coastal environment. I am not ignorant to our nations immense landscapes, I was merely referring to the perception of Canada. Oh, and surprisingly enough, I did very well in both Geography and English. I have never smoked pot. To be lectured about this stuff on the internet is quite ridiculous. Internet speak is hardly proper grammar. You also forgot to capitalize "pardon" at the beginning of your sentence, if you want to be like that, not to mention most of the following grammatical errors. Sentence structure mean anything to you? Now moving on...

Bowman, I am at Red Deer College. It is a very small unknown program but quite good. It has an interesting twist as it has a place for actors and production students in the same course. Great for getting used to set etiquette and learning to deal with fragile actors. The only downside is that because it is so small sometimes it feels a little claustrophobic dealing with the same people. Great instructors though, and a well designed program.

Edit: Oh and i left Highschool some 11 years ago

Wow, did we ever get off track.
So back to the point. The potential problems at this point in time are
1. Workflow. I took the suggestion and downloaded Red Alert and some R3D files. Man no kidding a confusing workflow. I look forward to native ability within Final Cut. However, after some trial and error it is more than manageable.
2. Some one brought up the rolling shutter issue which seems to be related to specific lighting/ frame rate/shutter settings. Interesting problem but knowing about it can help to plan around it till a better method can be discovered.
3. Infra red sensitivity. This seems to have generated the most difficult obstacle for most as i have noticed on other posts. Lucky for me the lens i want, or more appropriately can only afford(18-50) has a 72mm diameter that is relatively easy to purchase an IR blocking filter for.
4. 2k windowed. Doesn't sound like a major issue for my purposes but maybe for others looking at this post. A legitimate concern for those looking to use S16 or 16mm lenses. Not sure I really understand this one, but i figure we will leave it till someone needs to understand more.
5. Grammar. Apparently it is a HUGE issue :) jk. no hard feelings Evolve. ( where abouts in this massive land are you from anyway?)

So those are the biggest drawbacks mentioned here or that I have spotted elsewhere. Anything else I need to be considering before diving in?

All of the above have workarounds at this point in time except for the rolling shutter (workflow = crimson; IR = hot mirrors; 2K with 35mm DOF = downrez from 4K). All of these workarounds are likely to improve and solidify in the immediate future - except the rolling shutter, which is just how the sensor works (according to many opinions). There hasn't been much said to the contrary from the Red peeps.

Skew don't bother me so much, but you better be braced to rent a 35mm cam if you ever want gunshots, sirens, strobe lights, lightning etc.

Clasp your palms and pray for 4K progressive in some far-off firmware update...

(ps. I can't help you with the grammar thing. That's just edumacation.)

From what I have read, The lighting issue only comes into play with HMI's and Fluorescents. Thats something I am more than willing to deal with. Thanks, although, if I am gonna pray for it, I might as well shoot for a near-off firmware update.

I think that you might be confusing 60Hz flicker with rolling shutter artifacts.

Skew occurs in EVERY kind of lighting. The way the mysterium samples temporally can be problematic under strobe lights, but there is no specific problem with any continuous light source other than the possibility of flicker which is easy to solve by tweaking the shutter.

Personally I don't thing LED's are there yet, only good applicationa are an on camera light if you are power challenged and to fake a monitor or dashboard lights in a car at night. Someday we'll have 18k led's that have good throw, great color and single source shadows - it's just not there yet, not even close. or put another way: A tungsten fresnel is essentially the same as it was in 1940 - and probably will be the same in 2030. Your 2008 LED's are going to be expensive junk in 5 years. Take a look at the first generation HMI's...

Buying equipment is the smallest element in your overall business plan... Finding work should be the biggest.

Good Luck, Desert dweller.
