Resolve is one of only three apps on OSX that can utilize multiple GPUs for CUDA or OpenGL acceleration.
What other applications can utilize multiple GPUs?
Already bought the 4000. No choice. Have to stick with it. I have a 5770, a Red Rocket card and an ATTO card for mini SAS. What do you suggest as placement in the PCI lanes of a current Mac Pro Jeff ?
ATI 5770 is two slots wide and takes both available PCIe power connectors. The only double-wide slot is #1, the bottom one. If you move the 5770 to slot-2, it will cover up slot-3.
Leave the 5770 in slot 1. You now have a choice. The Rocket and the Quadro 4000 can only run at full bandwidth if they're in slots 1 or 2. I'm assuming that you will continue using the 5770 for driving your displays and the 4000 will only be for CUDA compute. If that's true, put the Rocket in Slot 2 and the 4000 in slot 3 or 4. CUDA compute isn't as bandwidth critical as what the Rocket will be doing.
The only advantage to the Quadro 4000 right now is that it's a single slot wide and takes one power connector. 5770 is two slots wide and takes one power connector.
Personally, in a 2012 Mac Pro, I would not use the Qudro 4000 now. I would replace the 5770 with a new Quadro K5000 and be done. One card and it will run Premiere, Resolve and FCPX faster than the 5770 or Quadro 4000. The GTX570 or GTX680 are also options at this time. Cheaper, but still not officially supported cards. K5000 Mac Edition only started shipping last week. About $1800 street price here in USA. 2.5X more expensive than the Quadro 4000![]()
Damn... The listed price for K5000 Mac Edition is 2300€ in Europe... definitely too expensive for me...
Jeff, if I can't afford it, I might keep the 5770, what would be my other option?
If I can tag along on this thread... I currently have:
Slot 01: ATI 5870 1gb
Slot 02: Cyclone Card
In the Chassis: GTX 570 2.5gb & Quadro 4000 2gb
I happen to have another Quadro 4000 in a box. Should I swap the Quadro with the ATI? Should I change any of the placements?
Running Resolve and Premier mostly.
Thanks!
CB
Replace the 5770 with a GTX570 or a GTX680. The GTX570 seems to be a better fit, although becoming harder to find. Both are similar in performance for CUDA. You can typically find the GTX570 that has a flashed EFI ROM on it to make it more Mac compatible, meaning it will show the boot screen, work for boot-camp menus or start-up drive selector and other things. The EFI modded versions also seem to play better for power management and other things, if done right. That's a big "if".
