So I'm trying to figure out which lens to keep. I have currently the Red Dragon and Nikon 24mm 1.4 and The Sigma 1.4 Physical difference right away the build quality on the sigma wins. Price Sigma is a 1k less. So guys take a look at the r3d and let me know what you think as far as the picture quality. Thanks!

The two different shots are Outside on the terrace and Inside shooting in front of the window. Here's a link to all 4 pictures (r3d) Thanks for viewing.

It's very close but I think the Sigma may be a bit sharper, at least to my eyes. But it's so close! A resolution chart would be more obvious of a test.

I have the same conclusion. But at what Fstop was it shot at? There could be more difference whide open...

My guess is even wide open the Sigma will be equal or sharper than the Nikon with less CA and equal vignetting wide open. http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/24mm-f14.htm#perf

The dome roof tiles of the tower are what stands out to me and the clock on the side of the tower:

For the price you can't beat the Sigma ART series. Nan's rehousing makes them perfect for cinema applications. http://www.glcinemod.com/english.html

Looks more like a style choice to me.
And really depends on what other glass you'll be matching it with.

Thanks for the image post Matt.
My mind instantly jumped to compare the sigma to a Zeiss-like look and the Nikor more to an old single coat Leica-ish feel

In the meta it states the Nikon is at f12.6 and the Sigma at f5.6 for the "outside" examples which is what I did the comparison with.

wow, sounds like the sigma is way sharper in general then.

Yes I believe all the f. stops were at 5.6 but I could of pulled the wrong pic. But thanks guys for your imput. I think I'm gonna go with the sigma. Your right matt the dome is where you can see..

The sigma also shows significantly more contrast in the towers windows. - I have been eyeing cine lenses for a while now - Right now I am inclined towards Nan's rehousing of the Sigma art as well. Do you guys think it is a better choice than the CP2 super speeds? I dont rent much and it will mostly be a personal set.
I am trying to watch as many Sigma tests as I can. I like the look and think that Nan's rehousing have improved a lot. Would love some feedback if anyone has versions of Nan's rehoused Sigma primes. My only concern is wheter Sigma will ever do an 85mm to complete the set since they already have a fast 85mm.

That's a personal choice really. CP.2's will have better rental opportunities because of the name, but as an owner operator set, the ART series beats out the CP.2's pretty easily in every aspect...

Here's some results from the High Speed Lens Shootout if you're interested in CP.2 performance: http://matthayslett.com/salt-iii-high-speed-lens-shootout-wfo/

My personal choice would be Nan's rehoused ART primes over the CP.2's any day. Lets face it, the CP.2's are rehoused Zeiss ZF.2 stills lenses anyways.

Thanks Matt - I will review the link. I am not so interested in rentals anyway. Most locals are seeing the Red expensive, let alone the cine lenses. But as you said for an owner operator I think the Sigma's will be better.

No problem. I have no doubt the Sigmas are overall far better than the CP.2's in every aspect. They just don't have the famous name. I'd go Sigma all the way and if people want to rent your set and are hesitant, let them shoot a test and I guarantee you they will love the Sigmas.. When you get a set if that's the way you go, make sure to post some footage here so the word continues to spread.

Yeah I agree with you Matt. I will shoot a test once I get them. I'll try to buy the 24,35 and 50 as soon as I can and shoot some tests. It will be something to show potential rentals as well. Just hope an 85 comes out in due time too.

Yeah, I hear you on the 85. Also hope they do an 18mm 1.4 but who knows.

I was reading on the Sigma rumors that the 135 was mentioned by the CEO - I see no reason they will skip the 85.

Not to hijack the thread - A while ago I was in contact with True lens services about a Nikon set rehouse, but it never materialized. To be honest I still think Nikons will make a great set. I started out with Nikons but using the still versions for video is a pain.
