  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Comparative tests

I guess it is time to respond.

The test seems like a good one but it was done with a few holes. The Alexa had more DR than MX. We have acknowledged that from the beginning. But it is more like 1/2- 3/4 stop. Not 1.8 stops.

We screened an epic and alexa test for pilot and epic had a couple more stops over alexa. Mind blowing dynamic range and resolution!

Great to hear this.

Tell us something more about that test screening....

EPIC is a different story altogether. The "EPIC boys" are posting results now. I think that Mike Seymour has a clip that could not have been shot with any other camera. I have seen it... should be posted tomorrow.

If highest resolution, most DR, highest frame rates at full res matters, EPIC is the solution.

Hi.

I am not claiming that this test has any validity for any other cameras or situations than those tested, and I accept than I may have done mistakes.

What I tried to do, was a test the way I would like to see it, and supply the original files so that the results are verifyable by others.

As to how I have judged clipping and latitude, nothing of that has been done form redgamma. There is no other way to shoot, but I amquite familiar with, and spend some time in the test discussing, that there is more dr on the red than what you see in set. I even think I have documented that pretty well in this test and in the recently posted skintone test.

Jim. Are you saying that the actual RAW file, will have more DR when redclor2 is available in camera? That would be nice.

I am in no way surprised if the Epic has more dr with the same sensor. I have been discussing this a lot off lists, and that would make sense to me. My bet has been in the region of 2 stops...

In addition I have tried to link to other results than my own, for second opinions.

Arri are not really satisfied with the compression debayering results and have offered to supply me with new frames from sup3 of the alexa.

I willpost those along with mine.

I would indeed like to see Michael Cionis comparison and methodology, and if there is anything blatantly wrong in there, I have and still offer to remove it.

I deliberately do not throw up numbers of the total available stops. I have tried to set the cams, side by side with the same optics at the same stops and the same shutter and shoot stuff to see what happens.

It makes sense, and I see it too, that in the matching shot, the RED has a bit more highlight integrity than the Alexa, when adjusted for the nd6 difference. Thus the difference in highlight tolerance is just short of 2 stops, in the results I have.

Sanjin, please do your hdr test on that comparison and see if you find more info there...

The same goes for the lowlight exteriors. The files are there to download and compare.

Off to work...

Cheers

Gunleik

Arri are not happy with the results of the fringing/compressions results, and I have offered to update t
