So... I've just finnished a comparative test between Red mx and another camera, but I am unsure whether it is good practice to publish it here these days.

What is the current status?

Cheers

Gunleik

as long as the MX is involved, i don't see why not. RED as a company has done their own tests and posted. ASC members have posted their comparison results. When the zacuto ASC single sensor shootout is done, I'm sure it will be more than welcome to this forum. As long as people can keep their heads, I don't see why this can't be pursued.

Well... I work Red 24/7... I have an Epic on order. All in all that's at least 6 Epics I am intimatedly involved with. All my own work is on Red, and I am happy with that...

Let's see how long a test like this stays alive...

I really love Red and what it means to me. But is it possible to discuss photography and comparisons here anymore?

And, mind you... I am fine with the answer, even if it is no for practical measures.

Cheers!

great test, great objectivity. apples and oranges, make your choice basically. people have different priorities when it comes to a camera. it's just laying it out there.

Gunleik, I got notice of this through CML, and have been reading your paper for the last hour. It is fascinating as a comparison of two different camera design philosophies. But beyond that, it is the most interesting and enlightening discussion of how digital cinema cameras make pictures that I have ever read!

Thank you for sharing this. For those who take the time to read it, it will improve their understanding of the craft.

Thank you so much Gunleik. You've put a lot of work into that and you've given us, for perhaps the first time, a truly balanced and objective comparison between the two cameras from someone who actually understands post (The very thing I believe is missing from almost every other test I've read).

I hope you have the storage available to leave it up on your site. I've bookmarked it.

Gunleik... no issues with posting comparative results. But since people often use these as gospel, it is nice to get them right. Couple of points here...

1. REDcolor2 and REDgamma2 are the preferred choices... you will see some some extra range there.

2. DRX is included in REDCINE-X for a reason... Fixes the color bloom around highlights.

3. Speaking of the blooming... we know the Alexa uses a Contrast Filter to roll off the highlights.. LightIron has done a test with Contrast Filters on RED to match the one on the ALEXA if you prefer that look.. Maybe Michael can post those results.

3. Exporting jpegs from RCX? Even with the disclaimer ( thanks for putting that there ) its a bit sideways.

Thanks for taking the time to do this.. Im not knocking the test at all. Just want to point out a few things to make sure all that hard work has meaningful and accurate results.

Jarred, any chance of getting DRX to work with Rocket transcodes?

2. DRX is included in REDCINE-X for a reason... Fixes the color bloom around highlights.

Jarred, the trouble with DRX is that it doesn't with a rocket-accelerated workflow. For me, and I'm sure for many others, that means it is a tool of last resort. It's not just that it's slower. It also has to be done in a separate batch after the rocket has been disabled. I'd love for that not to be the case (I use the equivalent 'recovery' function in Lightroom all the time) but the reality is I just don't go there.

Thanks a ton Gunleik, that's the most comprehensive Alexa vs R1 test I have seen thus far. Very interesting observations with the highlight diffusion! Personally, I would rather prefer a slight clip on the hat (correctly graded) than losing all detail around the bulb. This needs to be investigated further, along with tests on the R1 with similar low-contrast filters.

thanks for the tests. Very interesting read.

Thanks a lot, guys.

To make a couple of things clear.

I did not judge whether an image was clipped until post.

And in post I have used redlogfilm.

The original frames from the shoot is available for download. If I have done a mistake, the tests are repeatedable forothers, like with the skintone test I posted.

As to DRX, there is a workaround, which I have been using in the development. You can adjust the top of the curves, to aligne the channels.

As to the filtering. The filer I had that matched the cameras the most, was an 1/8 black promist. I have tried Ultracon, but I haven't had the right one. I think a 1/16 ultracon might look about right.

I keep hearing a 1/2 lowcon seemed to be almost a perfect match.
