[SIZE=-1]Looking for an experienced and artistic color correctionist/grader for a low budget independent feature comedy currently in post production. The film was shot on the RED One camera. We are based in Los Angeles, CA.

We need someone who has the proper equipment/programs (Scratch, Da Vinci, etc), not someone using Final Cut or Avid color.

We only have $2,500.00 to spend on color correction so please do not reply if you are looking for more money. Wish we had more to spend.

Great movie, great chance to really showcase your talent with color!

Please send me a message with your contact info, resume, and if possible links to examples of your work.

Thanks!

Hummm... Indie Feature? $2500? Scratch, Da Vinci?
Good Luck Sir.

hey, why not?

if the movie is really interesting. why not. i mean how do you know is this movie masterpeace or not?
if i am in US, i will at least contact them to see what is it about etc. i'm sorry to say that - but i do not understand your judgment...

remember "the kiss of the spider woman"? low budget, all film done in one place. you may think - cheap movie. but film got 4 nominations and one oscar for main actor. started in cinemas with ONE copy, and few weeks later it was shown in more than 200 cinemas. huge reactions around the world.

and that was also low budget film.

and these guys are open to others saying - we have such and such amount of money, and if you wish to help us - that's what we have. pretty ok for me.
they are not saying - hey, work for us for free now, and when we start another great movie we will pay you for your job.

you can arrange really different and amazing things just if you REALLY wish. and respect others. i am sure they will find a solution for themselves. maybe it will be difficult to work during regular hours or during specific period of time, but if they ask someone who owns the equipment - to use it i.e. when it is not used (nights. weekends etc.), or to work when certain colorist have, say one hour free, and then work again when he/she is free again etc. i am sure it will be possible.

if you ask someone even in the most expensive post house about color grading for that kind of movie - if movie is ok - i can bet that every manager will find a solution to help them in their's budget level.

guys - don't give up!!!!

just my 2 cents.

More importantly, why are you specefically asking for Scratch or Da Vinci? I have seen some people achieve amazing proffessional looking color correction with Color, AE or other non real time color correction tools.... heck even Stu Maschwitz will tell you that you can essentially achieve similar results with a good desktop color correction app as a Da Vinci...(at the cost of rendering time of course...)

So true
for the money you are offering, your grading most likely will look like poop even if it's made on the Davinci.
Go for some talented grader who works on his home based color system.
It's really not about the hardware as much as the person who drives it.
All the best.

True, you would be better with a talented person at home than a third assistant apprentice in the middle of the night in a pro suite.

I've been blown away by what some of these people put out.

Get a good colorgrader

Hi,

The problem is good color graders generally want to be paid well, as they are pro's with many years experience.

Scratch/ DaVinci?
$2,500
do guys really do it for that rate?

IF so where ?

If you're considering Color for film-out, you should still budget inn a DPX log-transcode before grading...

But, ouch... Then you cannot do it on an iMac anymore...

It would be interesting to know what kind of budget you count with for the FILM-OUT. You could mix both budgets into one and as long as you budgeted something sane for the film out, it could be an incentive for some companies to throw in the grading for 2.5K but ONLY if u have the right budget for the film out.

$25,000 for an arri-laser film out in 2K with stereo sound, answer print and maybe a show print seems to be a very tossed around number...

Then again, IF you are looking at HDSR deliverables, then be advised that just one copy can run you almost as much as your color correction budget.

For the software your talking about and the experience to use it well you're likely looking at the following numbers.

Grading Suite: 300-500/Hour

A Named Colorist: 60-100/Hour

Where as with apple color your talking about:

Color Suite: 30-60/Hour

Colorist: 25-50/Hour

Typical 90 minute film, I'd budget about 40 hours of work to grade it correctly.

Just my thoughts but maybe some helpful feedback. Does not mean you can't get some one for less but it all depends on your project, more details might be helpful for people posted publicly.

Shane Dillon in Seattle grades a feature in 1 - 2 days tops on a Quantel Pablo. As do colorists at Ascent Media. Unless there are TONS of problems. 1-2 days is PLENTY on a Real Time Color Corrector.

$125/hr for 20 hours of CC is a nice offer for an EXPERT colorist... but I think you are forgetting the kit rental aspect. $250 to $500/hr

Hey Tim, is that time estimate for a stylised art grade or really just about balancing colors and moving on to the next shot?

Kind of like "how long is a piece of string."

I had a colorist quote 10 hours for a 30 second TVC once. I said no.

Forget 20 hrs of grading (really a full feature in 1-2 days? Copy and paste I guess. But then is it really grading?). How much time do you think will need to be spent on actual conform from an inexperienced student production? How about bad EDL/XML?ALE, missing material, blown exposure, AWOL editor, endless changes on picture locked edit, dealing with SFX house files exchange etc. All of that and more, guaranteed...
But if someone wants to sit me in-front of Lustre, Baselight or whatever else with everything already conformed, ready to go for grading and gives me $2500 for two days of work, count me in...

Ive seen Jake fix a music video combining
Scratch
REDCine
and Lustre.
A music video is only 4 min long 4min 30 seconds tops and it took days.

1 to 2 days to do an entire feature length film RED footage?
20 hrs will it look good?

Something just dont sound right.
Have you ever seen something that fast done Jake?

This spot http://vimeo.com/7105692 is 60ss Long and took about 20 hours to grade (red footage, with 80C and a TON of tungsten, so no noise problems here). There is a given, that on a advert spot you have a TON of people giving their opinions by stages (DoP/Dir then Agency low tier, then agency's Sr's. Then you get agencie's clients Jr.s and THEN the seniors. But still, a proper grade, where the Colorist will bring something to the project besides just balancing shots is something that takes a while.

Color and AE are great software to work with ! I was looking at the footage of Leverage the actions series.. done on Color ! I am sure you will find one !

Disagree strongly. 16-20 hours to grade a feature? Of course it could be done, but that's moving REALLY fast. So fast there are compromises.

Anyway, $2500 for doing an entire feature on real gear, while I suppose is possible given the stars aligning, is definitely a "good luck" situation.
