Codex Vault - Onset Edition

Hi There

Im thinking of purchasing a Codex onset Vault to offload RED mags and Codex XT cards. Just wondering what peoples experiences have been using this for transcodes and wondering if dragon files will work with this box yet and also do i need to insert my rocket x card somehow into this thing to make it useable.

The Vault downloads extremely quickly but transcodes agonizingly slowly and the interface for applying looks/LUTs or (god forbid) syncing audio is frustrating and clunky. It makes a great additional near-set safety backup box but I can't think of a reason to go through the hassle of hauling its bulk around on location.

Be advised that if you just want to use it as a rapid downloader and physically gigantic hard drive, and let your computer do a much better job of coloring/syncing/transcoding your media then you will need a fiberchannel PCI card in order for the Vault to interface with your computer.

Be also advised that the internal hard drives can only be configured to handle one kind of media at a time. So if you want to download REDCode and, say, ARRI ProRes, you'll need a separate internal hard drive for each of those formats.

wow Keith i didn't realise it was so inflexible. I was hoping to drop in a new rocket x card and be sorted on set but no one can answer me about dragon footage with it yet.

also is it painlfully slow transcoding Arri RAW to prores?

Yes, Resolve or Scratch or OSD is 1000% faster and easier to use for transcoding. Keith is on-target. The Vault excels at internal copies and verification but getting the footage off to shuttle drives takes way too long even if you get it working correctly via Fiber. Also worth noting is the internal Raid storage is only 8TB. Way too small IMO. You can add other 8TB modules but they are prohibitively expensive. The Vault does work well if you need on-set LTO backups. And the metadata management aspect of the Codex UI is well integrated. Basically, it's a large-scale Feature box. Not the east-to-use, all-in-one solution it has been marketed as.
