  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Codec errors...

Great, big hug!

I'm shooting a chroma key setup tomorrow. Current plan is 4k 2:1 with a build 15 2.2.5 body.
I shot on-location stuff all last week, without any incident with 16 3.1.5, but got seriously burned on a simple test with 16 3.1.6. Dont' have the guts (or stupidity? :-)) to risk anything.
So playing it safe hopefully.

Anything newer than 16 3.1.6 I should test? (On another body)

It may not make it in time for your shoot tomorrow Anders, but a short while ago today Jim posted this update on Build 16 which should interest you:

“Tomorrow we will release a build that takes care of 99% of the codec errors for Build 16. A few days later we will post the one that (hopefully) eliminates them altogether. Working as fast as we can.”

Very cool...RED is taking care of the codec issues as quickly as they possibly can...

Anders,

I shot a bunch of night exteriors and TL on 16 3.1.6 tonight with no incident at all. I shot REDCODE 36 4K 2:1 23.98.

I also shot about four cards worth of Day light foliage (trees moving in the wind, etc) without any problems.

I am trying to "break" this build but I have not been able to. If 3.1.5 was working for you, why don't you shoot on that and have the B15 camera there as a back up?

Just a thought. The great news is REDSPACE does help the B15 footage too, but I could comfortably go to 640 ISO on 16 and the blue channel looks great.

Are these codec error fixes including the random frame compression issues as well. These scare me the most because you don't get signs that they're happening when they happen.

Continued testing today while waiting for the new build promised to be here this morning.

I have a theory about why some people are reporting the compression failures to be "fixed" by shooting at 2:1 rather than 16x9. Shooting 16x9, we were able to see the problems every time we shot into the trees with a 16MM lens, but did not get them with the 32MM lens; perhaps shooting 2:1 "solves" the problem simply because it's field of view is narrower, thus there is less detail in the picture to compress.

I've now dropped back to 3.1.5 and am fairly confident it will be OK for my shoot next week, but remain wary of the compression failures that may occur without an alert warning.

I'm looking forward to the new build Jim said should be ready today and will test it and report to the forum.

Edit! Actually, it was Jarred that said a new build would be available this morning! Sorry!

Good shooting and best regards,

Leo

Interesting point! We didn't yet have the chance to test it with 16mm and we had difficulties to provoke the error with our lenses.

New build today... soon.

Jim

Excellent!, cant wait to see it. My fingers are crossed that the codec errors are now a thing of the past.

Will be on RED.COM/SUPPORT in the next 5 minutes. Let us know how it works out for you..
