  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi,

have serious problem while shooting. Several times had Codec Error in this specific environment. :ranting2:

4K 16:9 25fps RED28 on CF Card
18mm Zeiss Ultra Speed Lens TStop 4-5.6-8

Forrest in sunny backlight with smoke

Attached is JPG and here is link for TIFF file compressed in ZIP

Environment without smoke was fine...this specific environment was very difficult.

Can you use files where the Coder Error was shown? How can I tell if they broken?

Can you fix it please asap?

Issic, we are working hard on resolving this issue.

For the moment, there are two options; shoot at 25 fps 4K 2:1, or if you need 16:9 aspect ratio shoot 25 fps 3K 16:9. Can you also copy the .LOG file from your digital media, ZIP it, and then e-mail it to me please ?

Send it to stuart@red.com

It seems as if build 16 has a contrast problem. In environments with a large proportion of extreme highlights it gets codec errors, or at least that is what I believe happened to me from a shoot I just recovered from.

Best thing right now is to try to stop down and also shift to 2:1. I know it sucks but there's a bug somewhere.

I also want to add that this is estimated guesses from what me and others have experienced but from looking at your pic it seems to be the case.

Fast reply Stuart, thanks a lot! I love when somebody cares. I'm starting full production tmrw. (That's in 9h from now) this was just atmospheric test. We have two cameras. This happened on "B" camera. "A" was ok, but was not having similar shot. If there where shots directly to sun thru leaves that was ok as well. So it's contrasty and not contrasty...think when there is enough horizontal and vertical lines in picture as the ripples and waves...as forrest and light strikes.

Will send you log files tmrw after production day, completely forgot them o take with me. Cross fingers not to happen tmrw with actors!!!

I take the risk and I can read, dont worry, so leave this provocative commentary to yourself. As you see I'm not blaming anyone, I'm just pointing on problem.

And as you DON'T know the whole picture, don't judge to quickly. We have 100 days production ahead, it will be much worst from my point of view to stick with build 15, with problems of old codec for such a long period or to have mixed two codecs in one timeline. Not talking about all the benefits of build 16 (Redspace, Booting Screen, Better Handling of names...)

B16 is still in BETA and everybody that use for a certain production takes risk.

Are some people are really...?

I'm in the same boat hahahahaha. Send the logs asap (I have) so Stuart and the guys can start solving this.

Good luck

Build 16 for sure. Do you have any Red Drive(s) so you can switch to Redcode 36 in the event you get an error?

And I hope still people will read this I have some two or three miner issues as well.
1) To both camera operators and to me, the picture seems to be more saturated in LCD monitor then in RED Alert @ MacBookPro, maybe the RedSpace is slightly off?
2) Sometimes in random behaviour (after long time stay..maybe) the camera will boot without a picture from sensor. Everything is normal but no picture. Turning camera on and off helps.
3) False Color seems to be WAY off (1.5 stop off to overexposing). Almost not usable, is that possible? Is that somehow connected to RGB Histogram?

Thanks.

Well ... you can start to get into the "how well is your macbook pro calibrated" land here. Have you shot a color chart and compared that on the LCD and your macbook pro?

That's a new one on me. Are you saing it has booted, displays the correct readout on the back lcd - but NO IMAGE out the Preview, LCD or EVF?

are you on default settings here?

False color is showing you REDspace rather than RAW data, so yes it may look high, but its still O.K to work off of.

Sorry offhollywood . About calibrate , If i will callibrate monitor
with some calibration hardware , will it help me ? . I mean you will
get digerent picture but not same as it is on LCD or in Apple Color. You can not manage it from Color Chart .
You can shoot it and just understand what is difference. :) . All i now about it , it is that better when yours monitor is in 709 or else gamma space ,
and it is calibrate with software + hardware . CineSpace is good for it.

Yeah I know with calibration...but this is well desaturated. Anyway, it's minor dont bother me to much...

The camera boot, show ALL MENU and Booting info, but no Life picture, till end where there is framing, histogram (don't know if with something or blank, assume blank) all the info in LCD (dont have EVF unfortunately yet...waiting) and in BACK but No "LIFE" in LCD. Just black solid. Happened on both cameras.

Yes I'm on default settings.

And going to sleep. Will read your post morning. Thanks a lot for support and answers!

Sorry Biba -

I am just trying to help.

When someone says - one LCD looks more saturated (displaying Redspace) than another LCD (macbook - displaying same footage in RedAlert) - the first thing I question is if the two LCDs are calibrated closely.

I am NOT talking about using Cinespace (great product) on a "on board" LCD for shooting RAW - I was just asking if they had made any effort to verify that their Macbook was not "off" the LCD at the RedSpace settings - and YES you can achieve that by testing with a color chart.

Just a stab in the dark here - if it happens again, instead of turning the camera off an on again - UNPLUG the LCD cable and then plug it back in. IF that solves the problem, report it to Red as it could be related to the LCD cables (or the LCD's themselves). I had an issue like this once - replaced the LCD cable and never had the issue again.

OK friendship :) I was just interest how dose it works. We try some
calibration and no result. (good result ) and after it we never trust
any monitors :) . Except CC room monitors .

I really don't think of ANY LCD that is currently available as "reference grade". And shooting in RAW doesn't require "reference grade" monitoring while shooting. That being said - you can adjust your Macbook pro to "closely match" your Red LCD for example by shooting a color chart and then display the footage in RedAlert on your Macbook along side the Red LCD showing the color chart. I am just talking about getting the on set tools as close to each other as possible.
