  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

COACH...

Clearly, this will never fly... its not ready for the Avid™. ;)

In all seriousness, thanks for showing the many industries that Red serves, that there's more uses for a motion picture camera than just shooting current resolution broadcast TV. Oh, and for doing it at an amazingly cheap price point. As a customer, I appreciate not feeling like I'm funding your company's R&D efforts all on my own.

From direct experience, I can tell you that when you have a $400 an hour model, the RED quickly pays for itself in the ludicrously high number of "perfect moments" it delivers.

It seems I always have my finger on the shutter at just the right moment... (i.e. I just roll throughout the shoot)

+1 And Epic will be even better. It can't come soon enough. :-)

Rather than thinking of the still's aproach, using a motion camera, as a cop out or a shotgun type style, the stills photographer will learn to become even more of a director, one that might begin to approach the nature of an artistic director of a dance/ballet Co, etc.. Seeing the "decisive moment" was rarely a problem for these types of still shoots; pre-visualizing and creating the world that led to the "decisive moment" was the problem- and that hasn't changed.

Ha. I thought I was doing big stuff printing 60" wide stills from Red One motion files for courtroom displays. Coach has me beat, BIG time! Congrats on a brick and mortar endorsement that draws many eyeballs. Even if they don't know what they are looking at...

It looks to me like this image is from a camera that is not in motion (although extracted from a video) - there is no motion blur whatsoever which is desirable in a video and not in a still. Its a great image but not sure what is being shown off here if the camera was still.

I am a director/DP who also shoots fashion, not vice-versa. Vice versa often reveals that the fashion photog has no skill for storytelling whatsoever.

It's not a cop-out, it's an admission that we are human, and miss moments because we do make mistakes with that trigger. Besides, sometimes the unposed moment in motion is so much more alive that what you set up with too much fuss. The Red permits a different style of photography that feels less stilted and more cinematic. I am tired of Wallpaper magazine et. all where everyone in the photo looks cryogenically frozen.

Models are not actors, anything that can help their performance is very, very useful.

Just use a fast shutter....

yes of course you can - but you will get motion blur with a fast shutter - just less of it - My question is more about what is this image showing off - couldnt you take this image with a dslr? If the camera were moving and this image came from it I would be amazed (or assume an extremely fast shutter which makes for less desireable video usually - not always). So what are we supposed to notice here?

I think it's the simple fact that you can take a frame out of a video stream and print it the size of a window display, and it looks good enough to put in a high end store, which is very very impressive. The implications and uses in fashion photography may be debatable, but the fact that a video frame grab can have that high of quality is pretty much astounding. At least to me.

Thanks to the iPad, I expect RED to make large inroads into motion fashion photography. Seeing "stills" come to life on the iPad is really cool; I expect more and more advertisers to take advantage of that.

I'm not quite sure that I understand what you are getting at...are you asking if this was a still grab from filming while the camera was physically in motion as in a dolly shot/hand held etc?

Sorry. I am a dummy. I thought the post was about the entirety of the pic and not just the image INSIDE the storefront. Now I get it. Looks amazing. My bad :)

Haa haa, you weren't the only one.

So I sat and stared at that image for 5 minutes thinking man, it doesn't look that great at all. Read the first few replies with people saying nice. Sitting here scratching my head before reading further and realizing it was the image IN the display. GOT IT.

AWESOME!
