Cloverfield Sneak Peek Clip

PM all the answers. :sorcerer:

I'm interested to hear what everyone thought happened in the last shot... or maybe we just need a new Cloverfield *SPOILERS* thread to openly discuss it.

Apparently the last shot was kind of explained in the viral marketing ARG leading up to the release, which suggests a different origin than what you might guess. (BTW, I missed seeing the thing -- even though I was looking -- but my wife saw it. Pretty good easter egg if you ask me.)

Here's a link: (SPOILER WARNING)

I am also very impressed that most of this picture (minus fx...which seams like a lot of the picture) was shot on 720 HVX, is this confirmed. The picture quality help up IMO, I did not notice a lot of grain in low light stuff but pretty sure thats what they were going for.

I agree that a RED an Scarlet would replace this production...and I would love to see them in action for the sequel.

I think that the Camera the idea (story wise) is that it was shot on the Panasonic AG-HSC1U, I'm not sure how much of the film was shot on this but it with the 4GB SD card it records about 90 mins.
Here's the IMDB pic which shows that cam in action http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/1060277/Ss/1060277/04020.jpg.html?path=gallery&path_key=1060277

However I also spotted another pic which looks to me like an HVX-200 indicating that they used it in at least some of the film.

Then of course you have the heavy weight cameras for the Special FX.

Everything was HVX except for FX plates. Probably shots like the bridge getting destroyed, the pan up to the building that's toppled. You can tell if you are looking that the shots most likely to be non-HVX have more simple moves or are morphed, cross dissolved, or cut with an original HVX shot.

Uhmm, maybe not: link

Apparently it was shot with a slightly bigger and more expensive camera.

Hmmm, so what if any shots were shot with an HVX??
Where is Panasonics press release? (If any thing was shot
with the HVX??)

“Without any lighting, you could see so deep into the shadows it was unreal. The F23 camera sees more than the human eye.”

um....no?...

I think it was the most of the start of the movie a lot of the indoors shots the party etc.

I'm not surprised that it says most of the exterior shots are f23 seeing as most of the exterior shots involved some form of visual effect.
Though I think the shot where the statue of liberty head might be HVX because I remember them saying that they shot that bit before they started production on the movie or something.

The last Ferris wheel shot does sum the movie up, but you really have to pay attention. For those really hung up on this, check out http://www.slusho.jp/ which is actually part of the advertising campaign for the movie (I read this somewhere but I can't remember where). Check out the "History" of the drink, and then things start to make sense if you payed close attention.

I don't feel like I should have to research fake companies, read pseudo press releases, scour phony MySpace pages, and spend countless hours tracking down back story to understand what happened in the film I just watched. Maybe I'm just lazy that way. I seem to be the only guy complaining about this so it may very well be just me. Other than that, I enjoyed the movie.

I agree totally. Apparently, upon further reading, the ending isn't as definitive as I thought. Even myself who followed this thing since Transformers didn't get it. How messed up is that.

I can't say I followed it very closely since the trailer, but I did do a little reading in the months before the film was released.

I think maybe my frustration with this film is cumulative. It seems that everything these days is left up on the air and unanswered.

We have Scarlet, the little camera that will do something, only we're not sure what exactly.
We have Cloverfield and the only thing we know for sure is that a monster of some origin decided to tear NYC a new one.
We have the 2008 presidential race where the candidates in typical political fashion make a point of not telling the voters where they stand on the issues, and when they do, they just contradict themselves a week later.

It's all just getting to me. Can't something be black and white?

"The opening three scenes of the movie are shot with the little FD1, to establish that the movie is told from the camera operator’s point of view. Every other scene was shot either with the HVX200 (interiors and exteriors), Viper (interiors), or the F23 (mostly New York City exteriors at night). Some scenes include both Viper composites and F23 footage, and it’s hard to tell the difference."

It didn't quite live up to the marketing hype for me. I was hoping for more.

Plus there IS something after the credits to stay for.

Paramount just announced a sequel is in the works due to the success of the movie. Woot woot! I wonder if we're gonna see a different POV during the attack or an aftermath type film dealing with the destruction of the monster.

NICE! I knew it wasn't over... Matt Reeves has some things to say...

There's a moment on the Brooklyn Bridge, and there was a guy filming something on the side of the bridge, and Hud sees him filming and he turns over and he sees the ship that's been capsized and sees the headless Statue of Liberty, and then he turns back and this guy's briefly filming him. In my mind that was two movies intersecting for a brief moment, and I thought there was something interesting in the idea that this incident happened and there are so many different points of view, and there are several different movies at least happening that evening and we just saw one piece of another.

Isn't going to just about any hollywood action movie essentially filling a marketing created void?

Who goes to see a random action film they havent seen a preview for? We all say something to the effect of: "hey I want to see that because (insert actor, effect, director, or dp here)."

If the marketing made a void in you that you felt compelled to fill then the marketing firm just did their job!

That's ok with me... I love movies :)

I think Cloverfield 2 should be shot partially on the Red and/or Scarlet. That would be great.

What are they shooting Cloverfield II on? Anyone? HD GO Pro? iPhone 4 for some shots? TM700 for others?

pinhole ...

They should shoot it with an IMAX camera just for kicks, like there was an IMAX crew doing a doco or something while the cloverfield monster hit town and they decided to film it instead of run for their lives.
