  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cloverfield Sneak Peek Clip

I liked it. I'm glad the monster wasn't that freaky whale mutation that Abrams was throwing out there. The digital projector in the theater was not physically leveled quite right (the whole theater used to be 35mm and they seem to have the ability to move the projector from screen to screen) so the picture was just slightly tilted and the handycam approach was definitely better than that Blair Witch stuff. I also have to say that the Skywalker Sound mix was great. There's a shot right after the initial monster attack that shows the Marines/Army moving in to hit the beast and when the characters are crouched, you can really hear the left surrounds kick in with the monster roar and the sounds of troops moving into battle. I just wish there was a conclusive ending to the film. My mind is boggled with what-ifs.

If you really want to know, PM me or catch me on AIM. No one should be allowed to post the answer.

Well the answer sure as hell doesn't lie in the movie itself. I actually liked the movie for what it was, but it's beginning to piss me off that they didn't explain a damn thing. I don't need a Hollywood ending, but a little closure would be nice. Too many loose ends lying around for my taste.

FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS FORUMS

All I have to say was that it was fucking awesome. The best action film I think I've seen in years. By far Matt Reeves best film ever and defiantly comes close to Abram's best.

Just know going in that you are there to see a monster movie. Expect nothing else.

Oh... and the Star Trek teaser was awesome also.

So, Cloverfield. Anyone who tells you that you don't know where the monster comes from and what it is by the end of the film just didn't pay attention. The last shot tells you everything you need to know. The film is funny and exciting while keeping it real (or as real as possible). These critics that say "Godzilla" meets "Blair Witch" are seriously diluted since that is truly a skin-deep review. These people must not have ever enjoyed such films as Rocky Horror Picture Show, La Noche de Walpurgis, or Blood Freak- since this film is most defiantly more than just a beefed up BWP or Gojira. In the end, Cloverfield will sit somewhere between my favorite Hollywood action pics and the Draughthouse/Friday Night movie classics.

Now, the downside. For anyone 30 and under it's a sure hit. The ceiling age of the principle actors will likely restrict the viewership to the bookends of anxious high-schoolers to grad students. I'm not saying people over that age can't enjoy it but it is defiantly one of the defining films for Generation Y.

Sorry, YouTube- these guys kicked your ass. This is no film to download (if you do that sort of thing) this is a must-see in theaters or in HD- when Paramount execs pull their heads out of their buttocks' and settle on Blu-ray.

I'm going again tomorrow.

If you give it a "fucking awesome" then it's probably worth 8 bucks to see???

It's the new trend started by the Sopranos ;)

loved it... as being 17 and wanting to make slow, opposite of run and gun style docu... i loved it.... just my taste...

im glad they didn't show much of the monster.even though they kinda did....

Actually the answer is there. It's right at the end after the bridge is blown up but like most of the parts of the film that have the monster in it, you have to look carefully to make out what is going on.

I stayed until the MPAA rating screen came up after the credits. The movie theater people were looking at me funny wondering what the hell I was doing.

I watched it today and got a headache from motion sickness. :/ (I sometimes headaches from any 3-D first-person games.)

I thought the concept was interesting but towards the end I stopped caring about the characters.

I too had one hell of a headache on the way home from the theater. I was only interested in the monster going into it and I'm still only interested in the monster going out of it. The military clearly knew "something" about the monster and I'm sad there wasn't more exploration of that aspect of it but I guess it just doesn't fit into the way the movie is structured and filmed. They also created an extensive backstory for the characters at the party including some who you don't really see in the film at all.

I just saw it and found it entertaining. It's a very simple monster flick told from a subjective viewpoint and not much more than that. A different way of experiencing a monster goes to town which I thought was cleverly told. And I felt it was much more interesting to watch than most monster movies that hollywood cranks out. (Anybody remember Emmerich's Godzilla?)

My coworkers did all the previz for it and a bunch of us went to go see it together and we were pleasantly surprised. We were also involved with Trek so that was a nice little bonus.

Here's a little tidbit of useless info. The name Cloverfield was the codename for the film (Slusho was another), which happens to be the street name where the production offices were located, about a mile from my home. The name just kinda stuck and they wrote it into the film and titles. I can't drive by that street anymore without reminding me of the movie now.

hey Lexicon.... do PM what you mean by this.... i didn't notice it.... but i stayed through the end.... actually a few people stayed in the theatre to watch it to'

PM those details

Yes it does. You have to watch carefully at the last shot before the credits. It's explained as well as one could expect it to be explained for a non-narrative story format.

I do give it that. I was in the mood for the friday night flick sort of thing. Like I said originally, you have to go in expecting nothing more than a monster movie. Don't try to read too much into it.

Exactly.

I really like Emmerich's Godzilla.
Then you will probably like this. Except it's a whole hell of a lot better. The monster isn't laying eggs and it doesn't need to be "understood." It's just a BAMF that rocks Manhattan.

You only had to stay until the credits started to roll. It's the last shot that is the key.

I don't know about you, but some unknown object splashing into the ocean doesn't explain a darn thing to me. That could have been anything.

NO MORE BARF CAM!

It sucks and just f**ks up movies.
Watch what Ang Lee did on Brokeback Mountain, basically no camera movement at all. Hardly even a pan let alone a rise or tracking shot.

I hope JJ Abrams gets bombed by letters to do a sequel or something. With the audio blurb at the end saying it's still alive, I'm hungry for more!
