  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

cloudy Bomb EVF picture

Mine is milky too. Lives in the case for now. Figured it needed too wait for a solid firmware update that would come eventually. Will try the black shading option too

I received my Bomb a couple weeks ago and found three issues:

1. The blacks are indeed very milky, it's like looking at a log picture
2. Dimming the EVF down it goes way green, brightening it goes magenta. There are a believe seven brightness stops, and the darkest two and brightest two are almost unusable.
3. There are these really annoying lines that flash intermittently on certain gradients of light to dark. This happens especially when panning and is really distracting and difficult on the eye.

Comparing it next to another Epic with Bomb yesterday I found the same problems. That one went even worse into the greens as it dimmed, but problem 3 seemed a bit more subtle, yet definitely there.

I'm very much hoping Red can address some if not all of these problems through firmware, because here in South Africa we shoot a lot of very bright exteriors where having a good eyepiece is crucial. I do believe problem 1 will be sorted out, and the fact that Mark managed to 'see the blacks' for a moment gives me hope. What I worry about most is actually problem 3. It would be great to know if this is something others have experienced and if it is consistent between the eyepieces.

Caleb, I am wondering (if this stuff hasn't already been posted there) if a post in the "Bugs/Problems/HELP" section of the forum might be a good idea... this milky image problem at least seems to be pretty well-known, but the others you refer to should also be noted in a place where people can compile all of that stuff so RED is definitely aware of it.

Can we stop the wondering about whether Red knows about the milky blacks issue?
Every release of Epic firmware has included a note like this one...

"Operational notes specific to EPIC Build 1 v1.7.10:
...EVF black level raised in some cases"

So it's clearly a firmware issue, and hopefully one that Red gets around to fixing soon.

Of course, the 'some cases' part is...

Yes, mine is also milky and playback stobes with it too. Look forward to a fix or at least an acknowledgement from Red about it.

I have a question about "4. Real EVF..." What is the actual advantage to this? Thanks in advance...

If you've ever used the annoying bulky flip-up viewfinder on the EX3 you'll know exactly what the actual advantage is. The TV Logic viewfinder looks to be almost identical in size and bulky formfactor... I don't know why anyone would spend $1400 on that thing, but that's just my opinion.

any news on this issue?
I'm thinking about ordering a BombEVF but with this issue unaddressed it seems pointless.

I have heard that Red has a fix for this issue and new EVFs that go out should not have this problem.

Hi Martin, where did you hear this from?
Is this a hardware issue if they are fixing all new EVF's?
How do you make sure you get a "fixed" EVF and not one with this issue?

The issue regarding the EVF fix was conveyed to me via my Red rep in an email.

I don't have any details about it being a hardware or firmware issue.

I suggest you email Red Tech Support and ask if the issue has truly been fixed.

I have my EVF but cannot test it because I have not received my beloved Epic-X yet.
