Hey guys, need some help here.

I'm an editor for a startup company that is going to start delivering a 22min program to Altitude Sports Net. These shows will need to be dubbed to DigiBeta and have Closed Captioning. We shoot Red and P2 but will be exporting to standard def tapes. I need help figuring out the most efficient and easy way to CC a program IN HOUSE. We wont have time to be using an outside company.

We are buying a Sony J-30 Deck with a firewire input which we'll be using (we don't have Kona cards). What other hardware do we need to make this work and what software?

HELP! Thanks!

I can't comment on closed captioning (it's done differently in the UK) but I should point out that the Firewire connection on the J30 is not an input. It is an output only, since the J30 is only a player.

Before you go on a shopping spree:
The J-30 deck doesn't have any inputs. It's playback only.

EDIT: Too slow. Nick was faster.

Call Mike at Caption City - his turnaround is super-fast, his rates reasonable, and he is in Denver - you will really find that it is quite time efficient and cost effective...he has contacts at Altitude so could very well deliver it directly.

Cool! I'll call him up.

Crap! Thanks so much for the info

the new fcs3 supposedly has closed captioning support, i haven't tried it yet but the white paper should be some help.

CC works fine.
Pick a .SCC file on print to video / edit to tape and you're done.

And creating CC (.scc files) in house is possible with my Subtitle application.
(you have to switch it into CC mode though, otherwise it does subtitles!)
But i've only tested with Firewire. Perhaps some cards work different.
It is easy to test with the free demo.
You do have to have a CC capable monitor to test though, as the Mac shows you nothing!

Important to know is that you have to set the start TC of the CC file to 00:00:00:00, no matter your timeline start!
(That took a while to figure out, since almost nothing is documented)
