  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Clipfinder 2.1 final version released

I might be retarded...but I am I correct in saying that Clipfinder cannot conform an FCP XML to the R3Ds if the FCP sequence was cut using self-contained Quicktime files generated out of REDrushes?

Our offline editor cuts with DVCProHD offline transcodes from REDrushes, which disregards the naming conventions for proxies, and just writes out a .mov file with the same basename as the original R3D file.

When I import the XML file of the sequence into Clipfinder it only imports the .mov files, and I can't figure out how to get it to see the R3D files so I can set up the one-light grades in RA.

Any ideas?

Scott,

Thanks for your kind words.

In the scale width and height I would love to have a pull down menu with popular formats like 1920x1080 720x486 etc. Also I would love to pick 100% of clip if I wanted to (or 50%) etc.

In the crop I would love to be able to do something similar like picking 4x3 crop so I could center cut my shots and render them to prorez to quickly dump to beta tape for the news channels (something I do frequently)

I had figured that people would set up different presets for their most-used formats. If this is not working for you, could you give me some real-live scenarios so I can think of a better solution ?

I would like an option to place the rendered file back in the same directory as the r3d file (although I am still toying with this, but I think this would make a second render easier)

And lastly the most complicated request of all would be to be able to render one time to quicktimes that I will rough cut, and when bring that xml back into clipfinder have it able to relink back to the r3d files and I can render final online versions. I know about the size challenge and I could just make my files 1920x1080 to begin with just with a 1/4 or 1/2 debayer then render the final shots with a full debayer. Now I own crimson and am very happy with it, but would rather render through redline (instead of redcine) as it is much faster, and I am happy to finish my color correction in color.

As you've probably seen, there is another post asking for the same thing. I'll try to come up with a solution within the next few days. BTW, scaling is not a problem as long as there is a fixed size ratio between old and new clips. In that case we can just rescale the FCP sequence. The problem begins when you have non-RED material (which doesn't change size) and RED-material (which changes size) in the same project.

Cheers,
Hans

Mel,

You are correct. I'll try and figure out a way to make this work. Give me three days.

Hans,

This may not be a clipfinder thing, but here is a thought. With the CS4 (Premier Pro / After Effects) REDcode Importer plug-in coming (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=21101) - what if one continues cutting on FCP until that time, then exports and EDL or XML, could clipfinder be used to relink R3D (not proxies) files to Premier Pro or After Effects. Clipfinder is the only software that seems to read all the attributes exported on a FCP XML. In essence, this would mean FCP would work as the offline and Premier PRo or After Effects could become the Online using R3D's. Would Automatic Duck also need to be involved in this?

Sorry if this is way off here, but just a thought.

Clipfinder 2.1.3 links transcoded files back to R3Ds

Clipfinder 2.1.3 links transcoded files back to R3Ds

I have just released Clipfinder 2.1.3.
As usual, it is available from http://www.daun.ch/software/

This version adds the ability to load a list of transcoded (.MOV) files, either from a directory or (more likely) from an FCP XML file, and to find the R3D files with matching names.

This will support the following workflow
- quick transcode to 1/4 or 1/8 resolution files
- import into FCP
- edit
- export XML
- load XML into Clipfinder
- select "Replace MOV with R3D" from File Menu, then select directory holding R3D files
- render R3Ds at high resolution
- run Clipfinder conform to replace low resolution transcoded files with high resolution transcoded files while scaling sequence dimensions to match.

Cheers,
Hans

slowly your application becomes a killer application

Dale,

I'd like to complete the feature set for working with FCP first.
There is still a lot to do.
I'm afraid that supporting multiple platforms (FCP, Premiere, Avid) will be difficult for me (and having to buy licenses for all platforms does not make it any more attractive).

Cheers,
Hans

Hans, does this mean it will only render the parts that you have edited, or will it require the export of the entire original R3D file?

In other words, take a 30min file, bring in the proxy, edit 10 seconds of it, export the XML...will Clipfinder only do the :10?

Thanks for this! It's a great app...it's been more reliable than RED Rushes for us, so far.

Kevin,
Currently, you still have to render the entire clip for the conform.
With any luck this will change before the year is over.

Cheers,
Hans

Hans, you do this and it's worth some cash. I really like where you're headed with the application. In our workflow, we use it just like RED Rushes, so it's probably not worth a ton of money. However, you get the ability to set in points and outpoints, or even better, accept an XML document and suddenly it is worth a couple hundred dollars, to me.

That said, I would still love for Crimson or someone to get the XML stuff working with RED Cine so I can color correct only the frames I used on long clips. This is the idea workflow and I'm very disappointed it's still not working after having these app's out for a year or so.

Thanks again for the free app. It's great you are doing this.

Hans, is there a way to avoid this problem I keep running into.

When I leave quick render and go back to cliplist, it starts to render any clips I select again. Do i have to quit the app after a render job?

hans-

You are the man. I know rendering entire clips can be problematic for some but I have prefered it so I can slowmo freeze frame or add any number of effects and it always conforms correctly. I have been using this workflow for months and am very happy. You just made it sooooo much easier. Thank you so much. Let me know how we can pay/repay you. We are so lucky to have this application.

Ps I will test my cropping to see if I can make it work for 4x3 the way I want and get back to you.

Steve,
I know what you mean. It happens to me, too.
This is a tricky user interface issue.
Rather than locking the render list, like REDRushes does when you start the render, I decided to keep the list completely dynamic. That way, you can add clips by drag&drop, the watchfolder, etc., even while the render is in progress.
In combination with "render selected clips only" I can see how this behaviour might be confusing.
There's two ways to avoid this
1) press the stop button when your render is done
2) if you want to browse clips while the render is in progress, open a second document and start its render process. Browse clips in the first window and drag the clips you want to render into window 2.

User interface improvement suggestions are welcome.

Cheers,
Hans

I think it did it to me after I hit stop but I will check this, maybe not. I can work around it. You've made life a lot easier with this app, so I'm can't complain. :-)

What a great little utility

What a great little utility

Thanks so much for this. If you're working on a large project or on multiple disks, it really does the trick.

Thanks for providing this amazing tool, Hans. I love its UI, and it really makes sense to me.

Here's a couple of questions to you:

1. it asks me if I'd like to stop rendering when I close the program even when the render is complete (or so it seems to be?). Makes me a bit nervous.
Do I need to hit the stop button once the render is done before I proceed to do anything else?

2. Is there any limitation to how many clips I can load into Clipfinder? It's crashed about twice when I loaded up about 148 clips.

My only suggestion so far is on the "render task slider". It took me more than few seconds to realize that the slider indicates the "number" of clips in increment. How about putting the actual number although it might be just that I'm a bit slower than other people :)

Again, I really appreciate your hard work, and I look forward to the day your app costs at least something.

Nook,

Thanks for your feedback. These are good points.
I'll put in some code that skips the "stop rendering ?" question if the render is complete.
You do not need to press the stop button.
I'm sure there is a limitation somewhere for the number of clips, but it is much higher than 148 clips (unless you're really, really tight on memory). If you experience a crash again, feel free to send me the crash log.
I'll also add a number indicator and maybe a label to the render task slider.

Thanks again,
Hans

Kevin,

This keeps coming up, but I must admit I'm a little wary of implementing a conform with optimized rendering. I feel that if such a feature exists, it should be able to correctly handle the same clip being used multiple times, potentially with different In/Out points, audio tracks separated from video tracks (with different In/Outs again), etc. There's a lot of things that could go wrong there and screw up somebody's edit. My simple conform is inefficient but safe.
I will try to get this done, though. It may just take a while.
I am considering an interim solution where I render from the earliest In point to the latest Out point (minus/plus handles). Would that help ?

Thanks for your feedback,
Hans

Hans -

Thanks for your response. Here are the specs on the current machine:

3.2 dual quad
6GB ram
8800 GT
X Raid 4.4TB

I will send you the log if it happens again, but it's not a big deal for my current project. I couldn't have been more appreciative for your app.

Best,
