  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

circle pola for mmb-1

Well everyone configures their mattebox a little differently, so I can't tell you how much you will have to sped until I know how you will want to use it.

stopped in Abel today and the only thing about this mattebox that bugs me, correct me if I am wrong mitch, is that I need to spend around 300 bucks in step down rings and couple hundred more to make the MB top loading so I can use my grads. Other then having to spend 500 bucks on top to make it work for me, I will say its a solid compact matte box. I was about to pull trigger until I saw REDs MB.

Yes, it turns out to be a bit more expensive than you hope at first. But it is a really well-made thing that doesn't weigh too much, and is just a pleasure to work with. And the folks at Abel will get it set up right for you if you are clear about what you want it to do, and what you want to do with it. I have to say that all good matte boxes that will really do what you expect cost more than you'd like, but they't worth it.

A note about the RED mattebox: They've said that it is only a clip-on. For my purposes, that's a no-go. (your mileage may vary)

So true. I have had a Redrock for a few months. I thought it was ok, no major problems. But I just got an Arri MB 20-II and it is easily worth the 3x price!

Plus I can use my Formatt 138mm round "drop in" Circular polarizer.

Mitch, thanks for the write up. We too have received the wrong type (non-drop in). It was labeled "unmounted" from Schneider, so MMB1 users should avoid those since they lack the metal ring. No biggie, we'll be sending them for the swap. Abel has been very accommodating with our orders.

We're all human. I found out that at least one of the problem orders referenced in this thread was actually a mistake by the manufacturer, who placed the incorrect filter in the carton. Things happen.
