  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cinerod EVF, Z-Finder EVF, Micro EVF, for RED-One ? Are they any good ?

Even though it was "outed" almost from the start, the SmallHD EVF actually appeals to me personally since it can actually function as a monitor. 4.3" is a big difference from the 3" most these other guys offer so it'll actually double duty. I have the DP6 and it's swell so SmallHD has a good track record with me. The 4.3" for the operator, looped out to the 5.6" for the director sounds like a win to me.

I was told by the manufacturer, that the DP6 has MUCH better quality and sharpness than the DP4. The problem is, the DP6 does not have an eyepiece.

Dilemmas, dilemmas, dilemmas !! What to do !! ;)

True, there's quite a bit of pixel difference between the DP6 and DP4. DP6 is 1280x800 while the DP4 is "only" 800x480. You do pay for what you get, after all. An EVF for under $1000 with an HD screen just doesn't exist as far as I know.

I agree completely. I just have to find a viewfinder that will work with the DP6. I'm sure I'll have to customize it, but customizing camera equipment won't be the first time for me.

Pretty sure they are going to be coming out with a viewfinder attachment for the DP6... But it might be a few months before it is available. If your eyes can focus close enough the DP6 is very usable once you get used to using it instead of an "up to your eye" viewfinder. And I had a RED EVF for the first 2.5 years (sold it recently). The DP6 has peaking and I can tell focus just as fast and easy as the EVF, better really since the screen is 5.6in.

I would get it (with the sun hood & D-tap) and see how it works for you... IMHO - Would be better than any of the little 800px alternatives especially when compared to the RED EVF or the BOMB --- plus no waiting. I know waiting... I've had a BOMB on order since July... Otherwise the DP4 will probably be the best choice of the 800px EVF's because of the larger 4.3" screen size.

Or wait for the BOMB.

I got one of the first orders in for the Zacuto, so hopefully mine is shipping May 1. I'll let you guys know what I think. I'm sure it'll do fine till my Bomb ships. I may even keep it for the little cameras.

I'd go for the SmallHD (the 1280 x 720). While it doesn't have a magnifier yet, it will still serve you as a good monitor when your bomb arrives. All the others will end up in the bay by then…

Add a sunshade, get some glasses for looking at it from very close distance and peel the one for the other eye out of the frame. Serves me well while waiting!

Having the 4.3" definitely makes a difference, as I can tell. It looks like a solid choice, even though res is not up there with the DP6.
