  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cinema 5d guesses interchangeable

If I were canon..... I'd introduce the entire L lens line with PL mount and a wireless contoller..... And continue to refine the full frame cameras with small resolution bumps and 1080p video...... Let the camera be an affordable tool for the masses yet just a gateway to the pro market.

Well sure they are approved, yes Carey is right, they have been checked all along. If you slap the PL mount on a Scarlet it'd work. You'd have some massive crop factor to deal with if it stays 2/3rds, but it would work. We'll just have to wait and see what the upcoming announcement brings.

Just my guess: Canon bought RED, or RED is an independent part of Canon now.

Canon has the money and the needed infrastructure,
RED the motivation and the common touch to the users to develop good cameras.

Just imagine how cool that would be if that was true!

lol...guys...there has always been slated, a fixed lens scarlet, and an interchangeable scarlet. They may release both. Either way...nov 3rd...pumped...

Well, the news isn't that the box is checked in teh Red Store, but just the buzz that's been created about the Nov. 3rd and how other camera forums are speculating and waiting for the announcement. If Red wanted some hype, they got it.

Tom, Jim has already stated there is nothing with canon, and that his Nov3rd release date is going head to head with what he sees as his main competitor. OR more then likely, that he is sparing us the grief of getting worked up over some hack job of a 4k camera in the 10-15k range. The dates are only an indication that jim knows he has the better product.

Those scarlet indicators on the lens page have been there since the new site went up a long time ago. If you want to speculate, I would ask more of why the PL mount says it does not work with Scarlet, but the canon one says nothing? The hand grip also says nothing too. So who knows. We know that RED's roadmap includes the detachable lens version with a PL mount for Mini primes.

Or just confusion seeding, laying a false trail. I would do so if that announcement was so huge and amazing.
Regarding Canon, it is talked about two 4k cams, the light version with E-mount, the other one with PL.

Jarred said Scarlet will have its own series of interchangeable mounts since the body is smaller and the back focus distance is shallower than Epic. Canon and Nikon electronic, PL, C-mount, Red mini-PL, and possibly Red's own electronic lens mount have all been mentioned as options at some point.

I'd say the burning question is what size/format the sensor will be for the interchangeable version? Comments like the market has changed and what seemed like a good idea 3 years ago might not be the best now kind of hint that there may be something other than a 2/3" format coming.

A few of us have campaigned for a 4k m4/3 sized sensor interchangeable Scarlet and the hints have me imagining the possibilities.
If Red produced a 20mm x10mm .0047 pixel pitch sensor in their signature 2:1 format, it would be 4/3 size at 4k, S16mm size at 3k and 2/3" size at 2k. Not direct competition with Epic or even Epic S. But a camera like that could cover a lot of market ground with a brain in the $5k-7k price range and accept just about every common lens type and format out there. It would appeal more to the shallow DOF junkies and broaden Scarlet's market appeal considerably.
THAT would be my ideal Scarlet.
I would still be quite happy with the original 2/3" 3k format if that is what comes, but it is fun to speculate.

RED, the company that is hand delivering 4K RAW and beyond, merging with Canon, the company who is trying to force feed barely 1080 h264 compression, would be the worst conceivable outcome of the Nov. 3rd announcement. It's not going to happen.

Very interesting David, very interesting... ;)

Jim's recent talk of pride in RED building cameras from idea to shipping in America completely destroys the notion that Jim would sell RED to a Japanese firm.

He also said it Scarlet and Epic would share mounts. Only time will tell.

IMHO

3k is gone.

Why?

Jims quote:

5k acquisition, 4k delivery, redray, 4k Home and theater projection.

Where does a 3k fixed camera fit into that statement?
All scarlet cameras should have MX sensors. They just might cap the abilities. But it makes sense to have them as 5k b cams that shoot up to 60fps and match the images of epic m and x.

The announcement could retire the R1 MX or change stage 3, 3.5 and 4 completely.

I love the 2/3rds fixed lens concept, but I can't see where it fits in this landscape. I'm probably very out to lunch on all of this, but that's why I make films instead of manufacturing cameras. :)

David.

+1 on this front. I do think that since the Sony FS100 and F3 exist at their respective price points that both Canon and Red will want to jump in and play in that game. Why? Right now there is no competition in the market for S35 cameras between $5k-$16k. And to be perfectly honest, I think there's a lot more you can do at that level than is being done. Providing fertile ground for camera manufacturers to want to play there.

Canon has yet to produce anything that can be considered true 1080p resolution. I wouldn't be surprised if we get a 2k only camera from them. However, considering product life cycles 3k and 4k are totally in bounds as well. One thing we know for sure is that Canon has made camcorders with XLR and other nifty features and will probably have those built in. Unless they are creating something brand new with add on accessories for pro audio in a smaller form factor. Imagine DSLR sized bodies with a component grip with XLR and side components for viewing options. I'm a CPS shooter and one more than one occasion mentioned this would be a "good idea" over the last 3 years.

Red has clearly pioneered the way with the modular body type and Scarlet will likely be very "Epic minded" when it comes to constructing a fully fledged system. And I'm a huge fan of this. The big decisions here are sensor size, price point, and how many features are built in. Keeping in mind a Red One package is still available out there for sub $20k.

The only thing that would truly shock me, and I mean make me do a back flip and spin in circles, is if Canon and/or Red develop and release a robust FF35 body with a S35 crop mode built in. Then I'd be in heaven and have a hard time deciding whether I want to shoot with the camera or sit at home and stare at it.

Whatever the landscape ends up as, I believe in Red and what they are up to. They have been the most forwarding thinking motion picture camera company in the last 12 years. Nobody is making what they make. The mindset from larger consumer based camera companies is to incrementally upgrade and Red has not gone that route at all. Each camera they have produced has been state of the art and groundbreaking.

Keep in mind that if Nikon didn't announce video capabilities first back in 2008, the added video features in the Canon 5D Mark II would have likely been left out. That's why Canon waits. All the other major manufacturers at this point have shown their hands. Except for Red. And that's why Red has an opportunity here to make a massive splash. We already know the power of Red's .r3d raw format, most NLEs now support that as well. Red can penetrate the market, sell a ship load of cameras, and put much the larger companies on their heals. Thus again pushing the technology forward and empowering the shooter, which seems to be what Red is all about.

The other thing is this.

While we are all blabbing about 3k, 4k, 5k has anyone stopped to really consider post.

If Canon releases something like CANON RAW, their own version of raw that could be s bigger deal than file size.

What if their RAW does not need additional hardware to debayer?
What if their "system" is a bit more streamlined?

None of this will pull ME away from RED, but alot if people shoot F3 "cuz it's easier". Better should always win, but people are fickle and Canon has been quiet for a long time. Just turning 1080p on the 5D probably affected sakes of the RED One.

Who knows. It's all just bullshit until November 3rd.

David
