  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cineform 4K solution?

Opps! Missed that post. Obsolutely you can calibrate a laptop LCD screen. Remember I never said you couldn't use a laptop, I was a supporter or that wacky idea. ;) Laptop LCDs still do have a limited gamut, so external display can help, however the XRite form of monitor calibration tool get you a long way there with any standard display. Personally I think an LED backlight LCD on laptop will out perform the gamut of calibrated monitor of a few years ago.

Any want to get me a XRite i1Display 2, I happily review it on my blog. ;)

It has been mentioned the 8-bit limitation... After all, even the best LCD have it. Any workaround?

Yes, ignore it. 8-bit is fine for a delivery format, go to 95% of digital theaters today that that is what you are looking at. You need 10-bit or more for interim processing so that the best 8-bit can be dithered to the display. While a deeper display would be nice, particular as it helps for calibration, an 8-bit was never a big the issue.

So, no issues at all?

"Another issue is that you'll obviously only be monitoring at 8-bit, which is going to show banding in places."

Such as this poster had mentioned, is it right?

is the LCD more than enough with one of these calibration monitoring apps?

Haven't got a feel for how many people are actually going to shoot 4K@60P but given the price of the raw port it I'd say very few.

I think a lot of people will shoot windowed 2K at high fps though, its still a great quality option and the speed is eventually going to be well past 60fps.

I agree that the ability to work within an existing framework may tip a few more people the RED way. Lets face it if you've got an HDCAM-SR you've already spent a serious amount of cash, be nice if you could still use it will your flash new RED's.

In the end if it is just a firmware issue why not make it available as an option in the menu. Innovation, quality and affordability is what the RED is all about.

Sadly, it is the last piece that might prevent this from happening. The price for the RAW Port makes it engineering worth while, yet what I propose would make all but 4k @ 60p a free firmware feature of the base camera, yet there are engineering costs to cover (although hugely reduced.) I believe tradeoff is the Red camera will gain even more traction with the more conservative cinematography crowd by working tightly with existing dual-link equipement yet still capturing the full 4K.

I totally agree with your thinking. When the Red team is a little less busy, I hope they put some time into this.

Gordon,
CineForm dithers to 8-bit for no gradient issues. Is that what you asking? If you want to know what dithering is, check out the image processing section of the wikipedia entry here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dithering. This is showing dithering down to 3 or 1-bit displays, yet the same concept works for dithering 10/12-bit down to 8-bit, with much nicer results.

my..

are you speaking chinese David?

It would help me if you new what you meant. Occasionally (often) I will have typos or my dyslexia kicks in so that I may not write clearly, is that what you are saying? Conversely, if you just mean the techno-babble, that comes with the trade. If you ask me why something works, like 8-bit displays for display deeper data, or 10-log over 12-bit linear, I will explain it with as much geeky data as necessary. ;)

it's not you.. it's us.. some of us have no english for your tech talk.. but we are your customers anyway.. by now, my doubt is: is the laptop's LCD enough for calibrated monitoring?..

Don has opened a new interesting topic on subject..

here is the new thread:
