I'm sure most folks don't care about others chewing food with their mouths open, making all sorts of fancy sounds. I've noticed I'm always the one person who is seriously irritated by loud chewing sounds. To a point where I leave a table or blurt out a comment or two. My ears tend to tune in on that sound more than other sounds. Don't know why, maybe I'm nuts.

I've seen time and time again, in almost every movie, there is an exaggerated chewing foley sound during dialogue at a table or eating, etc.

I'm a huge stickler on sound, and most decent budget films seem to do sound properly. Am I the only one who thinks those exaggerated chewing sounds are irritating?

I was watching Julie and Julia today and I just wanted to stab my ears with screwdrivers. It was non-stop, two hours of chewing pain :)

Now imagine it in 3D and someone comes along from the theater with a stick of gum for you right when the gum chewing scenes come on. That's the future of cinema right there. :)

You have soft sound sensitivity syndrome. I have it too. I didn't know it was a real condition until a few years ago when I found this website:

http://www.tinnitus-audiology.com/softsound.html

No one knows what causes it. There is no cure. But there are other people who have it. Mine started when I was six years old. That was twenty years ago and it hasn't changed, not for the better at least. I thought I was insane too, and if you asked everyone in my family, they'd have agreed.

I'm always amazed when to stumble past people who have it without actually seeking them out. The last place I expected to find someone with it was the Red User forum! In fact, I was planning to do an in depth documentary about this condition, all I have are ideas but no money and no equipment for the moment. If you want to collaborate, I'd be happy to discuss my ideas further.

I knew I'm not crazy. I've been going through this for 25 years (38 now). Just this morning I had to get up and move my seat away from this guy who was chewing too loud, in a noisy restaurant. Even in movie theaters with popcorn chewers or girlfriend chewing gum.

Thanks for posting your story. I'll email you.

This is amazing!
I found this thread just now by coincidence, I'm just like you! Cannot stand chewing with open mouth! and don't go to the movies because of the popcorn! prefer to watch quietly in my home! gums are just the worse! never ending!

HAHA. I was telling myself whoever made this post sounds just like me. And I discovered it was my post from 3 years ago.

Too funny. I still get irritated.

I find it irritating and I know a person or two who hates it as much as you all seem to, but a SYNDROME? WTF? I must have chronic crotchety old dickhead syndrome. I know there are enough other people suffering from that to get a name. Maybe they can name it after me. ;-)

And people have said the quality of discourse on this forum is slipping..... :-)

You can blame me for this one :) Maybe someone can move it to Off Topic or just let it die out.

I'm so glad to have so many supporters. I think our brains just pick up too much of our surroundings.

Jeremiah, I broke up with a chick because she chewed gum in my ear non-stop. I think she knew it pissed me off.

Sorry to all the legitimate professional people on this forum for seeing this stupid post in Cinematography. It's quite old.

I was just teasing.
