Hello

I have been shooting some tests on the Red scarlet. I have no experience on shooting Red and i have never graded anything before.. I basically have know one to ask for help except for you guys so hopefully someone can check out the R3Ds and tell me what you think and even give them a quick grade... I seem to think they look noisy but then again i don't know what to expect from raw?

I'm about to begin shooting a new project so i'd like to make sure my files are usable... Thanks in advanced for anyone willing to check them out

Looked fine to me

I used redlogfilm and brought the iso of this shot down to 320.

These all look cool. I seem to just try make everything look as colourful as possible without looking fake.. But these less saturated grades give more meaning I think...

Ben i really like this look. Could you tell me what other settings you played with? Did you use any alchemy or other fancy stuff? Did you apply any sharpening? The more info you could give the better because as i mentioned i'm very very new to this... Thanks mate

No alchemy or sharpening although detail slider up and a bit of desaturation which I find helps with finer details. Redlogfilm, ISO 320 and a bit of fiddling.

Better yet, I've uploaded the rmd file so put it in the same folder as your original file and you can see exactly what I've done.

Here is one where I added some texture and sharpening.
Your footage looks technically great nothing to complain about. Your noise levels are close to zero and you are pretty well balanced so expose as you do and you should be more than fine.

And here is the grade as r3d snapshot / setting :

I love board shaping, did some of it in my teens, so I really want to see the trailer for this. If you upload a r3d trim for it I promise to give you my best shot at it.

Thanks Bjorn. Yes this looks amazing too, thank you so much... can i ask how you sharpen? When i move the slider in redcine x it appears to do nothing..

Board shaping is a dying art these days, being replaced by chines and Thai factories.. Which is why i'm doing a story on this guy.. I look forward to showing you my work, a lot of effort has gone into this as well as a lot of fiberglass dust into my cameras and lungs :) (Which i'm sure you've had your fair share of in your teens)...

When you say r3d trim, what does that mean? You'll have to excuse my newbieism... :)

Use the Unsharp Mask in RCX in the "post tools" section near the bottom. Amount 70-85 and radius at 1.

I tend to shoot at 800iso so as to make sure i don't trick my eye into blowing out highlights, and then bring it down in the edit to as close to 320 as I can while still maintaining the exposure I'm after.

Don't tend to do this as much if working for a director though as it will blow their tiny minds..

r3d trim is a great function, it allow you to bring in an edl or xml into redcine x pro and then use "r3d trim" in the export function. Then you get all your used clips neatly "trimmed" but still being r3d raw files. In other words you can make a short edit from multiple of long takes and "r3d trim" to a seperate folder wich then only hold the fames used for your edit, with head / tails if wanted (set to a chosen duration)

You need to activate / hatch the unsharp mask function in "post look effects" to make it take effect from the slider bellow. Same with alchemy and film look. The r3d in the link should have all those sliders and functions activated in it's setting.

I got my share of polyester dust for sure... A few years back I renovated my boat, then me and 3 other guys used up 4,5 tons of fiberglas and polyester in 40 days. I remember we used about 300 liters of aceton just to clean our hands and rollers... putting a ship in plastic is a bit like making a giant surfboard upside down, it get very messy to put it short... :)

Amazing looking also... Mine looked rubbish compared to all of these. Deciding on the final look won't be easy, i'm sure you guys spend many hours tweaking back and forth trying to pick a grade? Hopefully if i get budget one day i won't have to grade myself... computers aren't my thing :)

I'm very happy my R3Ds passed the test.. Feeling confident with shooting Red now, thanks to reduser of course

Thank you once again
