Hi,

I'm still in the preparations of buying a dragon.

So the first question is how can I run an EVF, Monitor and Directors monitor on the red scarlet? Can I just buy the +1 module? I believe there is an HD SDI out at the back along with the HDMI that you use up in the +1module. Therefore I have the red monitor out near the front of the camera. And the EVF out on the +1 module and an HD SDI out at the back right?

I'm guessing this all possible with the +1 monitor adapter.

Secondly. Whats the absolute cheapest way to get a wireless directors monitors. I have a couple of older monitors with my kit with lots of connection options one is 1080p the other around 400by800. I have mostly used teradeck in the past but they are very expensive. I'm looking for option that would be more around the £100-300 mark. Possibly a little more. I don't care about quality, its to give to a director or client so they have a brief overview of what the cameras doing. It will also be super useful to use on a crane. however I can just about use a long cable on some of the shorter cranes its just a pain.

I can spend more on a wireless monitor setup but its just not that important and more a nice thing to have I have a limited budget for lenses and I want to put as much into that as possible.

Many thanks.

I use a Paralinx Arrow + to a SmallHD DP4.
I can also use an HDMI Display for a video village.
The Paralinx runs off the HDMI port.
I use a TOUCH 7" for the main display.
But at times, depending on the Focus Puller, we piggy back the HDMI to his/her display choice.
Last project we used a SmallHD DP6 in the mix.

Here is a full rig pic of my Scarlet.

The Paralinx usually sits on that RED SHORT ARM but we got lazy and velcro'd to BRICK :)

Thanks for the responses.

I'm glad that you only need the +1 module to run the normal three monitor setup. Christopher what do you think of the 7" display, probably the one i'm going to go for as it seems the best value also for the EVF do you like the magic arm attaching to the side bracket? Seems like the easiest/best value option as i'm likely to be getting the wooden camera side bracket bits anyway and a magic arm is relatively inexpensive.

I think the Paralinx looks like the best option as far as wireless video is concerned just going to have to wait a few months to get it as its pretty expensive for an add on feature.

7" monitor is cool. Works well and a lot better than a 5" for focus pulling, even though the focus puller has marks to use on the lens, a better bigger monitor with better resolution always helps.

Do you meant the TOUCH 7"? Cause the older 7" isnt touch capable.

That's a non-touch.... At almost $3k, the 7" Touch isn't necessarily a good value. BT Non-Touch 7" are $1200; less than half-price new and re-certified from RED!

I beg to differ ;)

Im loving mine.

The 5" was bad for my eyesight and a pain to wear glasses (farsighted).

The 7" TOUCH is awesome, clear and flips ;)

Haha, I'm not saying it's a bad monitor; I'm saying you're paying for the privilege...

Then again, I'm used to using some pretty crappy displays.

ON TOPIC: I was under the impression that the Nyrius is the cheapest wireless HDMI you can get (~$350-$450 with all the cables/bits you'd want for a DSMC camera).
EDIT2: A cheaper solution than the +1 module, would be to get a 3rd party monitor with SDI pass-through... So, camera port for EVF, SDI to 3rd-party Monitor, Monitor to Client/director/video village... Just make sure you have a robust mount for the monitor and you should be good... OR, you could also use an SDI splitter out the back of the camera (one to your monitor and one to client monitor).... That should work, right? Costs all of $10...

I heard somewhere that SDI splitters cause hassles. I have no experience in the matter, but just letting you know what I have heard. Would be cool to have it clarified here whether this is true or not.

That being said, the 7" touch was unavailable when I bought my RED. Would have loved to get that but on the other hand, greasy fingermarks on my screen also irk me. Neither there nor here, but if you are looking for a cheaper solution with +1 module, then old RED Pro 7". Another option would be to forgo the side handle, and instead use the money for the 7" touch. Many options and solutions I gather.

I'm using a SmallHD OLED ac7 mounted on a WCamera "Directors Cage". Paralinx+ and Switronix AB battery to power both the SmallHD and Paralinx.

I'm still trying to figure out best way to mount an iPod touch (running FoolControl app) to the Directors Cage so the system can double as a hands free focus pulling station.

The entire setup was a hair over $2k.

That sounds great. Do you have to be carefull with reselution to be able to see the menus? I heard if you go to high then you lose some of the setting/menus or something. Also what would you suggest to power the 3rd party monitor. Could I get the jet-pack back with some power ports instead if the standard Vlock back?

Monitor? would something like this work? any other suggestions?

Also the touch looks cool, but a crazy expensive way to add a bit better UI option. I'm planning on going for redmote + handle for my controls. Sure it wont have all the speed and ease of the touch but its nearly $2000 less. I would have liked the 5" touch but the second hand price is pretty high now they discontinued it.

Edit:

Chris,
I need the handle for the small red-volts for when on stabilizing rigs and lightweight cranes etc. Also that's annoying that some people have problems with SDI pass-through/splitter I'm not so bothered about bad quality on the directors monitor but if it starts impacting the focus pulls it would be pretty irritating.

Here is something the Original Poster could be interested in, perhaps it's more in line with what you were looking for.

Tips on HDMI cables.

With my Paralinx Arrow + one of my 1 footers got crunched so I grabbed a generic 3 foot.

Well I was surprised on set that this 3 footer didnt work with my Paralinx.

I had to lug a six footer till I purchased the same 1 footer that worked before.

Could be a version issue with the cables.

I use this mount for batteries for my Paralinx, but it's made for smartphones.

Thanks,

Looks like using a cheap hdmi transmitter on amazon is the best value way to go. Probably will consider doing that :). Would be so awesome to be able to use an ipad or iphone as a monitor :(

You know Im all for that and would be great if I had to tech to use foolcontrol.

But after a full feauture and a slew of shorts and music vids, I would be too freaked out to have an iPad on the set with me.

Them SmallHDs can take a beating when you drop em (mine is caged).

Now I could create a nice cage for iPad Mini using a Pelican case :)

Assuming you are talking about the Nyrius, I think that would connect with a laptop through HDMI, then perhaps you could send to a tablet or phone via wireless or even bluetooth from the laptop?

I've used the Nyrius to connect wirelessly to a monitor before, and their overview says you can send content FROM a laptop to a TV, but I've not heard of or tried to send from camera to laptop though.

No time to test at present.
