  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cheaper Alternative methods of Capturing Media

RED is working on a scaling function to eliminate the letterboxing on the output. Not sure when it will be implemented. Maybe it will be standard on Scarlet.

Ands do make sure to do lots of testing with the RGB output to make sure it suits your needs.

Steve- test RGB? why? what issues would one be looking at?

Perhaps Red can develop a simple backup module with 2 slots for standard 2.5" hard drives or SSDs. Press a button on the module or in menus to incrementally copy everything from the current Redmag in the camera to the pair of drives (mirrored for redundancy). Or set it up so that it automatically backs up whenever you stop recording. Perhaps when all the files on the Redmag are copied, a green LED lets you know you're backed up. At the end of the shoot, pull out the drives and stick them into chassis. If the drives are removable, it wouldn't need to be fancy - it wouldn't be critical to view files on the drive or to be able to delete them individually (a format option would probably be necessary though).

It'll be a useful piece of kit for times when carrying a laptop is not possible. It'll allow the financially challenged among us to get by with just one 64GB Red Mag and it won't affect Red's bottom line: those that can afford the Redmags will still buy them for the ease of use or for when they don't want any additional modules on the camera.

It's not ideal, but it's better than strapping an external recorder to your Scarlet.

Mark Toia had a thread running about the Atomos Samuria & how he was using it successfully with his Epic.

Heres the thread ....

Not really:

I did not have my EPIC with me to test it on sorry. So lets hope theres no silly EPIC / SAMURAI talking problem... But I suspect not.. 25p / 24p.. ??? thats just standard stuff these days.

I don't think I have yet to see a thread where external recording was being used successfully?

Crop issues
Flat output
Supposedly rough debayer

Can someone confirm those are not issues? Because everything I seem to read indicates they are.

Wasn't there a thread on Teradek or KiPro? The Mini KiPro was apparently OK but I doubt this is what anyone wanted to know?

The other thing was the sound devices option?

Not sure if any of those count

I was just at Atomos' offices a couple of hours ago, the guys ran me through the Ninja and Samurai systems on a range of cameras (including an Epic outputting to a Samurai).

We're going to organise a comprehensive test of the system for the relaunch of 16:9 Magazine (and I will go into detail then), but for a very basic evaluation of 1080p Epic captured to Pro-Res through the HD-SDI port:

- Super sharp (the image has spectacular detail, if the debayer is limiting things, I couldn't see it)
- No crop issues
- Colour output was fairly flat, but everything in the room we shot in was grey or white so it's hard to say really
- Some noticeable vertical-pattern colour noise in the blacks (which isn't too obvious until you boost the darks up)
- The most wonderfully easy post-workflow I've ever seen

Hey People check this out it does dnxhd to ssd 2.5 and is under 400 http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hyperdeckshuttle/

DNXHD? I'm pretty sure it only does Uncompressed.

BTW Dunno if it's been mentioned, but it's worth considering that 4kHD 24fps at maximum 18:1 compression is only 16MBps and should give you just over 1hr of recording on a 64GB SSD and is still probably significantly better in quality than Prores or DNXHD 1080p, especially in terms of resolution and post options.

Since when does the hyperdeck do dnxhd?

Very good point. The hdmi image is probably not debayered at all, but pixel sampled. Then the resize filter that makes that image is sampled down with what kind of resize to make the 1920 ( or is it 1280 ) ? Maybe a simple linear interpolate ?
It was never intended to be production quality imagery, so I'd be very wary of recording from that port.
Just sayin.

Has the debayer quality on the HD-SDI and HDMI outputs been confirmed on Scarlet?

Actually according to Deanan said in another thread, it is a full debayer. As for downconversion quality, no word on that, but its hard to imagine they'd do a full debayer in camera only to do a nearest neighbor downscale...

So it does a real full debayer, as if it has a red rocket equivalent in the camera body ? I guess someone will compare the image quality with the 'regular' way to see how it holds up on edges and color fringing, etc.
Then again, it's still 8 bits, so limited in grading latitude as well. Seems to me that a small Panasonic point and shoot w bit rate hack and the full sampled sensor might be more cost effective in that world.

8bits? Epic manual states HD-SDI and HDMI is 10bit 4:2:2...

A Panasonic point and shoot? how is that relevant? I own a GH2 and it is a great little camera with very sharp 1080p, but it's 8bit 4:2:0, m4/3, and not more than 10stops latitude and gets a little noisy past iso800, nor would I say the bitrate hack is a great idea for pro work. My GH2 just stopped working (wont power on) suddenly this week and I had to send it in for repair, apparently some of them have power issues. It's an amazing camera for the money but so is Scarlet, but they are completely different classes.
