  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Change...

Even you. You have a camera that can shoot images as good a "The Social Network". Let me think...

Jim

Indeed. I've gotten some amazing stuff already. The MX sensor is a beast.

I'm also happy you're still supporting with compatibility to all the new accessories. I hope that can continue a while longer.

Although we won't hear about new products in development anymore, I have to say that the glimpse into how RED does business over the last 4 years and knowing that if they could, they would, has allowed me to patiently wait for the best. Unfort. the business does force a "standard of operating procedures" and as RED has grown (or exploded rather) into the industry, it was expected.

I am eagerly awaiting Miss Scarlet and the opportunity to join the ranks of Independent filmmakers with technology that we would never have access to if it wasn't for RED. Thank you.

I just have a hunch ... I'm going to throw it out and if I'm wrong that's fine. I probably am.

But look at it this way: Jim has not announced EPIC-S as part of the roadmap. He knows his customers desperately need EPIC-S. He would not disappoint them.

EPIC-S is a compromise. What does Jim think of compromises? Well, I think Superman's feelings about Kryptonite are pretty mild compared to Jim's feelings about compromise.

Right now, EPIC-X is sold in a package to RED ONE owners at a price that's very close to the proposed EPIC-S pricing.

I think Jim has sharpened his pencils and figured out how to profitably sell EPIC-X at very close to the price of EPIC-S, therefore eliminating EPIC-S from the roadmap.

Maybe this is the reason, or maybe there is a new EPIC-T coming out that's a nice improvement over S but with the same price. We won't know until he introduces it ... but we will know it will be worth the wait.

If I'm right, you heard it here first. If I'm wrong, well, I'm wrong :).

D

Interesting speculation but how does the non release of information around Scarlet fit into this optimistic theory? Remember, Epic-S used to be part of the Scarlet lineup.

Don't guess. Everything will be fine.

Jim

I highly doubt that. It's already been announced that prices are going up on Jan 1.

It is in your best interests that things change... and get better.

That was clearly evident back in 2007 when you announced that you were giving the RED One reservation holders $2500 worth of free accessories just because we believed in you and your commitment to build the world's best digital cinema camera. You have always been extremely generous to your customers. So much so that some of your customers seem to think you are Santa Claus. You are not - Santa's elves don't work as hard as the team you have assembled at RED. Crazy thing is, you don't have to be generous. You ARE building the best digital cinema cameras the world has ever seen. They would sell even if you treated you customers as badly as the four-letter god treats theirs. But, we, your loyal customers, truly appreciate the way you keep your prices low and always surpass our expectations when we get the new products in our hands. My hat is off to you, sir.

Everything changes. And it changes every day.

What seemed like a good idea 3 years ago might seem completely wrong today.

We reserve the right to change. Expect it. It is in your best interests that things change... and get better.

It shouldn't matter what we do, what we name our products or what we change... as long as it is in our customer's best interests.

RED is not normal. Quite the contrary. We hope you consider that a good thing.

In the end, we have our customers best interests 1st and foremost. That is pretty apparent in hindsight. I would hope that whatever we do going forward, you would trust us to keep that core principle alive.

RED customers are our #1 priority. Above all else. We are also RED customers. So it is in our best interests every which way you look at it to change everything we can for the better as often as possible...

Jim

If anything warrants change in 3 years, it has to be Scarlet. If 1080P is not good enough, then why would RED make a 3K (1080P transcode) camera in 2012? My money is on this camera system taking a quantum leap
from announced specs in 2008. (if not now. then soon with a BRAIN upgrade) I have been lurking on these boards since October 2007 and joined early 2009. I have seen this type of announcement result in a BRAND NEW EPIC. Exciting as hell really.

We can all envy Jim and Jarred and Deanan and Graeme and Brent et all, kicking back at RED HQ and scheming about building the best digital cinema cameras with the best engineers in the world...
what a fun effin job.

All I can say is, and I trust I'm not alone, BRING IT... I am excited for the APPLE reporting model. Awesome that Joseph pointed out that this new "stance by RED" to announce when shipping
was followed by 10 new posts from RED on Reduser.

Just remember to sleep and eat. We will be waiting for the revolution and are excited as hell to be part of the 4K revolution.

Can you all imagine what it will be like when 4k is a small file and ubiquitos>? RED RAY can't get here fast enough Jim, Deanan (wink wink)

Change is good and someone should always be ready to accept this change flow.

Fluxus means change, among other things.

In general at this state of development for RED could be good to have just two or even just one base camera body to produce.

Those two bodies could offer one expensive high end feature model ($40.000) and one affordable lower end feature camera model ($10.000).

All models upgradeable, ($10.000) for high end and ($5.000) for lower end camera.

High end camera means EPIC-M and EPIC-X with S35mm 5K @ 1-120fps @ 5K sensor,etc,...

Lower end camera means S35 5K 1-60fps, but also 120 @ 2K, etc,...

The main difference between the high and lower model is a sort of assembly production (means the first handmade and the second factory production line assembly),

then comes warranty (handmade assembly of the high end camera model has always a longer warranty time), then recording speed @ full frame recording and some other little things...

Anyway RED like many other companies in the industry mostly earns money selling accessories and lenses.

Both camera models share the same high quality accessories.

Isn't 4k for a 2/3 sensor a little bit overkill? I don't know at which point it becomes too many pixels, but I thought that 3k for the Scarlet was perfect for a reason. If someone with more technical knowledge can correct me, please do it fast, and I'll shut up :)

The Scarlet 3k fixed is perfect for me and I can't wait to be shooting on it this year :) I'd hope that if any changes are made, it doesn't result in another delay.

AMEN!!

Somehow I feel that this is more about the EPIC-S and Scarlet Removeable than about SCARLET-F. We'll probably soon know anywho...

I think you're right. The misunderstanding at the NAB where Ted talked about the Interchangable Scarlet becoming an Epic *could* also be some early talk about what is happening now.
