  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Change...

So when is this Change... thread going to dissapear? Once we hit 20 pages and there is a ton of rampant speculation?:w00t:

It gets me excited though. Last time this thread (or a thread with a similar name and topic) appeared, a couple big announcements followed. Hoping for the same. And that it starts with an S (Scarlet) or ends with an S (Epic-S) :001_smile:

I think you're right. The misunderstanding at the NAB where Ted talked about the Interchangable Scarlet becoming an Epic *could* also be some early talk about what is happening now.

Perhaps... I honestly don't know what to think anymore :D Jim's "vision" sounds very, VERY exciting - no doubt about it!! Ultimately I want a awesome camera to shoot with - made by RED(and we all know what that means) - and hopefully soon! Anything else that doesn't directly effect the way I shoot or produce, is icing on the cake(which by no means is less than awesome "icing on the cake"!). I'm mainly interested in the cake ;)

Changes...

Why shoot 4K? If the world is currently finishing in 1080P and 2K, what is the real advantage to 4K?

The key word is "currently".

Everything changes. And it changes every day.

What seemed like a good idea 3 years ago might seem completely wrong today.

We reserve the right to change. Expect it. It is in your best interests that things change... and get better.

4K 2:1... We believe this should be the future standard.

We would not exist without you. We appreciate your patience, your contribution (we actually listen), your passionate support.

We especially like that Sony has acknowledged the importance of 4K. Coupled with Sony's 4K projectors... it appears that 4K is here as the new standard. Rightfully so. Film would be proud.

Even though the Scarlet S35 has just changed to EPIC Light... we have some big news coming regarding the Scarlet program. I am a big Scarlet fan and am excited at what we are brewing for the Scarlet program.

Everything moves fast around here... stay tuned.

Changes...
Yeah, we never did get any big news regarding Scarlet. From all the variations on the "4K is the future" theme I was almost expecting Red to announce that Scarlet would be 4K. I guess the next news is probably either "Scarlet is shipping" or "Scarlet is dead."

What does that even mean? I mean - like you are just talking about a name, nothing about meaningful specs or information.

I was referring back to other posts that were talking about the possibility of the Scarlet Interchangeable becoming 4k and moving up to the EPIC line. Seeing as we don't know the final specs, it's kinda hard to give an input as to how they will improve upon them.

Red will make something really good, at an affordable price, and if you can't afford it, then work hard and you could afford it.

Do not fret Dan, I'll look after my bank account, you look after yours.

I didn't think I could afford 60,000 even 3 months ago - and I did it.

Congratulations! Oh wait, 60,000 what?

Hopefully "change" means a Scarlet S35 body that shoots 3K for about 6 thousand bucks. :coolgleamA:

I still think the price bump on the EPIC-S left a gap in the "affordable" (meaning around 6K) S35 camera market.

Rumors have that Canon will announce their version of such camera on October.

I think it would be a great way of bringing the poorer guys into the RED Ecosystem; and once they get the dough, upgrade to the better models and sensors that will come in the future.

I'm with you Thomas (and others). S35 sensor size @ 3K as the entry level. There are some situations where 2/3" is appropriate but surely most Scarlet customers are aspiring 'storytellers', probably shooting on Canons at present.

I think we can all agree that whatever Canon puts out in the next few months, RED's product will most likely be better.

Given Red's belief that 4K is the future, I doubt seriously that they would develop a new 3K camera at this point.

As many, many posts in this forum will tell you, most films shot digitally have been shot on 2/3-inch cameras. An S35 sensor is great for shallow DOF, if that's what you want, but if you don't need it, you'll be fighting against it.

Better in what way? Higher definition? Probably. Higher bit depth? Likely. Cheaper? Maybe not. As good as they may be, Red's cameras aren't necessarily the best solution for every situation.

Given their price, customer service, their commitment to customers, and the amazing specs on their cameras, I would say yes, they are the best solution for most every situation.

Guys, let's please not go down the $500 DSLR v. RED, indie v. industry, haves v. have-nots path again...it's no fun for anyone.

Personally, I'd really love to see RED make some announcements about delivery systems - RED RAY PRO, RED RAY consumer, and maybe even a licensing option for the codec...get it out there, let people use it, and actually let me use all those pixels on my TV...and then give me a 4k projector!

Once the EPICs are out and established, perhaps RED could make a special price on a RED ONE MX package.

I think RED would kill any competition in the camcorder market with a sub-10K interchangeable S35 camera.

The SLRs will continue to thrive but cameras like the AF100 would probably have a hard time competing.

Anyway, that was the dream back in 2008 when Scarlet S35 was announced for 7K: S35 RAW video.

I actually prefer the DOF of 2/3"/16mm to that of 35mm for the simple reason that I usually don't have access to a lighting package to let me shoot at higher apertures on 35, so I'm forced to work with an f1.4 or something and NO DOF. Those who argue that 35 gives you more control over DOF make me laugh. They're all tools, the camera, and those people.

You know Alexander, lights are tools for more than just achieving exposure and being a tool is about poor attitude as much as stupidity.

Ho hum...Jim's announcing that things are changing again? Some things never change... :biggrinjester:

When they are ready to be released. But I can tell you... hold on to your hat. Better yet, put your helmet on.

Jim

he, he.

Exactly... I'm ready to burst.

The good news is that if you buy into the RED system you don't get hurt.

Jim

It's like Jim really wants to tell us something but everyone else is holding him back, trying to bring some sense into him, "remember, no more roadmaps for the competition!"

Yes, I was worried about that.

But please hurry, before I design my own ;) .

Jim and Red Team, I hope you get this post:

I know that, when the Scarlet models come out, there needs to be some sort of distribution plan in place. Please make sure you guys NEVER fall into the trap of the other major camera manufacturers who just outsorce to an "exclusive distributor" of the brand delegating every responsability of sales and support to them . Please make sure who you choose is educated, trained and, above all, understands the philosophy and the costumer you're targeting your products. One of the key aspects that differentiates Red from every other competitor is this "direct line" between costumers (reduser) and the Red Team. The fact that the development team (and you, the founder) reads these boards is what sets everything appart. I just don't want to be subject to bad service because of sub par distributors. Here were I am we are considered "second rate" costumers for the big camera companies in this area, specially their broadcast divisions that only want to sell to big volume users. Make sure those selling your products worldwide can be accountable, and should act according to your standards of service! Also, and this is very personal for my market, make sure that whoever you have responsible for the Hong-Kong market DOESN'T NEGLECT MACAU. Because that's what regularly happens over here!

Red Team, please figure out how to keep your excellent costumer support and service philosophy!
