Just a thought for RED (and any potential buyers out there).

Why not just make the CF module standard and up the camera price to an even $18K?

I'm starting to notice more and more users out there w/o this and don't understand why anyone would NOT purchase the module. Why not?

Well, I didn´t plan any productions that needed CF cards stability right now. And much is happening on the solid state drive horizon. For example Super talent just announced a $6k 256GB SSD drive. I expect that price to drop pretty heavily as others announce their 256GB drives... 32*8GB CF cards is $6.4k based on current prices. And I figure I´d rather just use one big drive instead of changing CF cards every other minute.

So Im hangin in there waiting for a red announcements with bigger/cheaper SSD solutions.. :)

And Im waiting for something else to fill the place of the CF module... (optical port, 10-gb ethernet or something fun :)..)

i thought that was effectively what they had done... can you get the camera without it?

currently the store says "An additional $500 charge will be added for the CF Module (required)"

so how do you order it without?

I simply will never order a RED camera w/o the CF Module, this is a major thing to have on tis camera, I have been using CF for as long as I can remember, and never, never had a single problem, this is by far the lightest and cheapest way to go, and even when money is no object, it still make sense to have the CF Module, it is better to have it and not needed then needed and not have it!

So my suggestion to all is, get IT!!!

Ciao

We were discussing this somewhere else in the forum yesterday and I made a similar statement about it being an oxymoron to have a "mandatory option" for the CF card reader.

Resident Red Warlord Brent chimed in and posted that the only cameras that didn't have a CF Card Module were prototypes Natasha & Boris.

Now if we could just figure out what all the "RED" Russian references are about...

Yeah.. the flash module is a mandatory option. heh heh heh. That has a nice ring to it.

Lord forbid the price point on the Red store page goes from 17.5k to 18k with the CF module... There would be rioting of small bands of indi film makers around the world.

As the years pass on with inflation / rising gas prices / falling dollar, etc. RED never has to change the 17.5 price point. They can always just add more "mandatory options" to make up for it...

This is all in jest of course ... I love pointing out other's quirks & contradictions because I'm so riddled with them myself.

Now who's printing up & bringing the "Jim Jannard for President" T-shirts to NAB?

Jarred, since the CF module is now mandatory, are we assured that it will be compatible with CFast or other new cards that can break the 16-32gig barrier?

Unfortunately CFast wont have a prototype for even another 2 years.. the spec isnt even ready yet... and its not backwards compatible with CF cards, so no, the current reader will not be work.

Good thing is though, that it is a module, so as new and better technologies come out, we can make modules for them.

sorry man :(

Uhm.. Yeah I would like to know why its mandatory aswell, since I skipped mine (I had only $100 left on my bank account when I payed my final order :/ I had to leave something out, and it happened to be the CF module)..

99.9 :)

we call it "mandatory" because you really really need it.. I think everyone can vouch for that. It is an option, but if you dont get it, you hopefully have a really really good reason because you most likely will regret it.

If you don't order it, does it come with the side panel with a slot in it? And the eSATA cable loose behind that panel? Hmm... I smell $37 solution. :)

[voids warranty]

Crap. Man, it's probably good that I don't have a camera.

[I'm kidding, in case that wasn't clear...]

That I do! And I totally already pre-voided the warranty on camera serial number "Yours"....hehe.

Brook, you have no clue what goes into our readers to make then fully compatible with the camera. You are being extremely irresponsible by suggesting this as a solution and you're putting other red users in jeopardy. The solution you're hinting at CAN and WILL cause problems (we've tested them extensively). Customer support has had to deal with the fallout from from your unqualified hack jobs. What's going to happen when a production decides to hold you legally responsible for screwing up a shoot?
