CF Epic Dragon - Canon EF mount

I've been shooting with an Epic Dragon MX for a couple of week and loving it - looking forward to upgrading to CF Epic Dragon as soon as I can!

The catch - Canon glass. I want to keep using all my Canon lenses but there's currently no Canon EF mount support for the Carbon Epic Dragon.

My question:
1: Are there any updates on the magnesium Canon mounts for the Carbon Dragon? This is the last I've heard: http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...bon-RED-Mini-Mag-Side-Module-Magnesium-Mounts

2: Does anyone have any experience using the Canon TI mount or Canon AL mount with the Carbon Epic? I've been told they're technically not officially supported, but that RED users are doing it anyway until the magnesium mounts are released. Does it work flawlessly? Any optical problems? Do all the electronics work? I'm curious! (and impatient) :beer:

Hi Marques,

It's been a hot minute since I last shot on a Carbon Fiber Epic Dragon, but I have indeed used the Aluminum Canon EF Mount (DSMC Canon AL Mount) on it with success. The firmware is the same and all of it functions identically to a non-carbon Dragon brain. You just don't get the weight benefits and sexiness of the magnesium mounts.

It all works, so nothing on that front should be holding you up.

I've been shooting with a Canon Mount and L series lenses for a few months now on our CF Dragon . Come on in the water is good!

Yes, what everyone else said. As Phil mentioned, the only thing you're losing out on is the weight differential. Otherwise, you should be good to go. Congrats on your Dragon!

Use my CF dragon everyday with the Canon AL, Canon Motion Mount , PL, and PL MM so they all work fine.
i have been shooting with a non CF Dragon Epic over the past few days and have noticed that it seems to run a little hotter than my CF dragon this is the only difference I have noticed. Not crazy hot just a few degrees but the Non CF dragon does have a V1 front fan, maybe that's it.

Even without the weight savings of magnesium vs titanium mount, I should still save a few ounces with the carbon body, no? When the magnesium mounts come out, I'll certainly switch to that to complete the package.

All of my still lenses I use for motion have gears on them. I either use Flexigear or the few lenses I have that have been modified by Duclos Lenses with permanently attached delrin gears and 80mm fronts.

I am considering a CF upgrade as well... I would to know the 'exact' weight saving. CF with mag PL versus CF with Ti PL????

Correct, it has a carbon fiber shell and side SSD and the body is made out of magnesium rather than alloy so you'll still be saving plenty of weight. If I'm not mistaken, Jarred was comparing the weight of a regular Epic w/ TI PL mount to the Carbon Epic w/ magnesium mount when he said a whole pound would be shaved off, so using a Canon AL mount would make the additional weight even less noticeable. Still, I think the magnesium mount will be the way to go once it is available. Although honestly, the difference in the weight of the mounts is pretty negligible unless you're doing heavy Steadicam or rotor work.
