CF Dragon bricked??

Brent,

please squash the living shit out of this one. Anyone living far from Irvine will get a bit nervous about this.

David, that is the same thing I am thinking. Not to mention costumes. Here in Nicaragua is really crazy about sending the camera for repair. Costumes are idiots. Just to give you an idea, my epic bricked on the 13 of january, it was only 3 months old, only 108 hours on it. The camera arrived yesterday back from repair. it took 2 weeks and a half to send because costumes wanted some kind of proof that it was under warranty, you know like an official warranty paper, sign by red, and that does not exist. Red support helped thou the best they could. than it took red 8 days for repair and to send it, and now i am waiting for costumes to give me my camera.

This Is my second camera that had the same issue that it just won't turn on and had to send it back. My back up camera is a scarlet and I could continue working, but without slow motion. The image one complete month without the epic. Really sucks. I had to say no to one job because no slow motion.

Don't know what there is really to squash. I know our return rates are ridiculously low, by industry standards. Also, we have not even had a chance to diagnose / eval the two cameras yet. Until we evaluate, we just don't know what could be the root cause. Let's not make RED guilty until proven innocent, guys, ok?

hey brent,

i know you guys do great work. I'm not saying your guilty of anything. It was just strange to see this thread on two brand new cameras. I meant it more in a way, like io know you guys are all over this, (like you are with everything) but threads like this can make people nervous. I'm sure you guys are all over it, I have no doubt about that.

And nd just to add.

I personally have not had one minute down with my epic through a lot of shoots and conditions all over the world since day one, a rock solid machine.

David, was not intentionally directed at you, no way. We are indeed on it and I am just saying I don't want people to fall into the availability heuristic trap. We have thousands of people happily shooting on RED - but not posting about it their camera being a warrior. People will remember the "my camera bricked" posts. I am simply trying to say that our return rates (I see them weekly) are pretty kick ass. But that aside, each and every report on REDUSER or via phone contact or via email, we take seriously and investigate. And we try to get to the root cause. Fortunately, we don't get a lot of these reports, so we can do the due diligence on each one.

Any idea why the warrenty for Dragon Upgrade is only 90 days? Why not just 1 year??

Same thing it was going from MYSTERIIUM to MYSTERIUM-X sensor. But, unless I am mistaken, you have extended warranty options/coverage?

Hey Brent,

After a couple of days dealing with the local FedEx, the cameras finally left yesterday. RED should get them on Tuesday latest.

For all those who are posting concerns, this incident will not stop me from adding more RED cameras (and gear) to my catalogue.

Just really curious to know if the stress test done to the cameras in the lab before they ship causes any inadvertent damage to the circuits boards and components.

Is there also an option to receive a camera without having the camera go through the baking and freezing process.

I feel like that process alone would damage the boards more than any real world situation.

So true. And if 2 flagship cameras diei on the same customer, yes, RED should fly someone out to look at them.

To do what? Box them up and fly with them back to LA for testing? While it might be a nice "show of force," it seem incredibly wasteful for Red to fly someone out to pickup broken cameras.

It is a disappointment for the camera owner, no dispute there. However no one goes out of their way to turn a problem loose into the marketplace. The folk who were on the development team must have felt gutted when after all their testing and proving and enthusiasm for their end-product, the dragon had one more little ambush up its sleeve waiting for them. Years ago, when Australian GM was exporting Holden cars all over the world, there was encountered a small problem in Kenya. It turned out that the carburettors had to be rejetted for the higher altitudes of much of the countryside there. Australia is wide low and flat by comparison and the issue had never reared its head. This situation with the Carbon Dragon may well yet be a unique combination of circumstances.

Exactly - seems those cameras will be sitting in customs for some time. Fly them back - don't use a courier.

2 Dragons failures with 1 customer should be treated with some sort of increased urgency. Days/weeks in shipping matter.

Hm...

I say: Listen to Brent and the OP.

This seems to have been taken care of.

Unfortunately stuff like this happens, and in my experience (not with RED) it is more likely that two items made in a consequent series have the same issues, than two items made 1.000s of units apart.

I have seen that on a few occasions.

This is unfortunate. And it is on track...

Move on. :)

As far as I can see, this post has not triggered an avalanche of news about bricked cameras around the globe.

Thus it is probably just the inevitable "Ghost in the machine" which has bitten an unfortunate and unsuspecting user.

I assure you plenty of other systems fail regularly. You just don't necessarily hear about it, we have a pretty fun forum here with regular contributors, I am not sure how many high end camera systems enjoy a user base like this, but I don't see it at other brand forums. This is far from being a Red only problem and if you talk to rental houses you will find out the truth, which is that they carry back ups of all systems because all technology is prone to potential problems and the things get beat on and used. I keep a policy on my camera, so does the house, and so does the renter, I could care less how often they brick it is the truth, other then it would cut into my cash cuz of down time, but even that can be insured against if I beef up my policy. I have to agree with Brent as well, you don't hear about the cameras that just work. Like the 2 year job I did on one Scarlet that now has over 1700 hours on it (no issues). Its cuz stories like that don't exist, and if they do, they aren't getting the kinds of reactions as the failure ones do.

This is beyond scary. Can't imagine my RED ONE MX dying on me on ANY shoot. Period. But a brand new $50k CF Dragon? Damn...that should not happen. Period. End of story. If you are selling the camera for cheap in as an early beta prototype sure...but Epic has been around a few years now and Dragon has been engineered to a T. When a camera is meticulously hand built and crafted with precision and care like the CF Dragon I would expect 99.9999% error free no camera bricking BS. IMO you should get a substantial store credit or refund for your troubles in your CF investment. Same goes for any new Epic that bricks within the first year. I completely understand that these are computers and they are delicate machines. But how come I NEVER hear about any other companies cameras bricking left and right and having issues galore? I assume it has to do with the huge amount of stress the internal hardware is pushed...I imagine it's like a maxed out computer pushed as far as it can go without exploding, but over-clocking and pushing something to the max will cause more frequent issues? Would make since if this was the case considering everyone is essentially using the same technology just different formulas and recipes & RED has the guts and vision to push the technology to the edge - like overclocking a computer and trying to get every ounce of power possible. I don't know I'm probably off the mark with that notion, but if that's the case then why are so many people having issues?

Well there you have it Robin....2 brand new cameras failing both at the same time on the same job is perfectly acceptable and within margins of error.....move on nothing to see here....

i wonder der what an acceptable failure rate actually is? for any machine or appliance? Cars? Toaster? computer? what if you bought 2 tricycles for your twins and they both fell apart after a week?

what if you bought 2 tricycles for your twins and they both fell apart after a week?

I would do exactly what the OP did, make the manufacturer fix it.

And as far as I can see, RED has been nothing but helpful.

I think it was interesting to see if this thread triggered a lot of similar stories.
It did not. THAT is kinda informative, right?

And then I guess this thread has run its cause.
Would you not say? :)
