  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Celere lenses by Hanse Inno Tech

85 to 95 is a big jump; I wonder if a 5mm shim could be permanently affixed to the fronts of the other 4 lenses

It's not a huge jump...as others have mentioned, the Cooke miniS4's are 87mm (25 and up) and 110mm (18mm). I think the more significant question is why choose 85mm as an outer diameter in the first place? It's a wonky size. 95mm is a widely used standard (as are 80mm, 110mm, 114mm). So despite the 10mm jump in outer diameter, it'd make the set more appealing to people who need to rent a mattebox. It's great that BT makes a donut/clamp-on for this size, but outside of the owner operator that already owns a BT mattebox and this set of lenses, it's not something you'll likely find most any place you'd go to rent other gear.

I had the same disappointment with Cookes...if at all possible, make the lens set have a consistent outer diameter. If that's not possible, try to make them with standard sizes. Before the miniS4's, I think it was one random ENG lens that had an outer diameter of 87mm. Arri made a back for the LMB5, but it was hard to track down.

Perhaps at first it was a pain to get 87mm MB backs, but now they are almost everywhere. If Celere lenses prove to be popular too, making proper stepping rings or native backs to fit the set should be short coming to the market.

While the 18mm Mini S4 is larger than the rest, which is a bummer, I might state that Cooke Mini S4's do all match from 21mm and up, which is a score of 9/10 matching front diameters.

I can't speak for Cooke on why they made the decision they did for 87mm, but I like the front diameter size. They could have made them a more common 95mm, but the goal was to be mini, so if they could make them smaller at 87mm, why not save on the weight and size? Also, being 87mm front diameter meant they were positioned to be able to make the inside screw-in filter thread diameter a smaller and VERY common 82mm, which has been amazing for my drone, vehicle, and gimbal work. I have 82mm Firecrest IRND's, Black Pro Mists, Pola's, and an adjustable screw in sunshade. Keeps weight down to the absolute minimum when a MB is just more weight than it needs to be.

Some larger diameter cinema lenses can take screw in filters but they only accept much more large and rare sizes. I don't use screw in filters often, but with the recent explosion of drone and gimbal work, it's been just what the doctor ordered. In fact, when I have a choice, I've sometimes been choosing to run screw in's over 4x5.65 because of the ease of use.

I'm guessing the lenses went 85mm for the same reason. They can use 77mm filters, which too are very common. 95mm size fronts with 77 or 82 threads would look silly. They went for small lens size and common filter thread option. The small jump isn't that bad. Most cinema lens sets have their widest lenses with larger diameters. 18mm with the Mini's is a little unconventional, but I'd say it was a choice they were forced into due to a combination of quality standards and cost point.

Initial description of my experience with the 4 lens set so far Tested today at the first ever ECLAIR (East Coast Lens Analysis Involving Redusers)

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...oming-Celere&p=1667443&viewfull=1#post1667443

Yup, as the host of the ECLAIR, I can confirm with Dan that I wasn't in love with these lenses.

At least when compared to Leica Chrons, GL Optics Rs, and SLR Magic APOs.

They breathed a lot, and the bokeh had a "dirty" unpolished glass texture that was distracting at best, and disappointing in general.

The coatings ARE very pretty though. And the construction is great.

For the price, they seem like good value.

THANK YOU to Nick & crew, Dan Kanes and Scott Devitte.
It was also great to compare Helium, Weapon and Dragon from -5 stops underexposure to +5 stops overexposure.
Too bad the bug reared its head on the Helium.

We tested many lenses....I wish I made a spreadsheet with our comments about sharpness, breathing, flaring, etc.

I do remember the Sigma 18-35mm and Canon 30-105mm both acquitting themselves well.

And the verdict? You guys going to post comparison stills? Very curious. Especially curious for dragon vs helium. Want to know if the upgrade is worthwhile!

Because of the bug our tests were somewhat truncated and we didn't get to some m mount and contax that were in the house.

We used my Otus ze 55 1.4 (t1.7) in ef mount as baseline. On the slightly cool side, and because of the APO design mostly eliminating CA, and the Zeiss snap, it is simply without peer on the (at least my) Helium.

My take-

Dans Summicrons, on the slightly warm side, as a set are exquisite, every time one was mounted there was a sense of legacy continuity, refinement and mechanical excellence. A make art set. The 18 is to die for. And the rest are to kill for.

The big surprise to many in the room but not to me because I own one is the Canon 30-105, a sumptuous skin tone feast of a lens. Like the summicron set, it competently performs and renders in a similar manner across the range.

The other surprise to all of us- The SLR Magic APOs. If they can round out the set and maintain the really special rendering, and build quality, and actually deliver the lenses, at the price they are quoting, they will be the APO no brainer, with the possibility of carving out a niche much like-

-the Sigma 18-35, at $800 ef mount or $$ cine-vised, is a wonderful workhorse of lens, probably the one RED shooter lens that everybody wants in their kit, the tests confirmed why.

G.L. Optics Leica, the Leica R look, if that is what you like, in expensive, well crafted, cine-vised fancy dress. The one set that didn't get much response yea or nay. I chased the R dream for awhile but found that Contax and Leica M are much more fun and reasonable, so I am biased and not a fair witness.

Celeres, for all their buzz when they entered the room, they were a question mark when they left. Each time one got mounted, the anticipation of something special was tempered by breathing, CA or unattractive Bokeh pattern issues, which varied from mm to mm. I really want to see the results of the test before I go any further.

I'm not sure that's true. A lot of people are starting to really like the Celeres...

Well, everyone cooled down now?
Good to see Sigmas and Leicas to perform well with Canon zoom lens.
Otus still lenses with Sigma will be the Primes to own as a Value for $$$.

Jiri,

The SLR Magic APOs are going to give the sigmas competition. APO on 8k sensor is a wonderful thing.

Man what set did you guys get ahold of for the celeres? I mean they do breathe, but not any worse than ultra primes or anything else in that category. And personally, the crons have no visible flavor or excitement to me at all. Least favorite set of lenses on the market. Ill take my r's over those any day of the week. Ive put my celeres through a good deal of work and havent noticed any horrid CA unless under the worst of circumstances. Im sad you guys didn't get to love them as much. Everyone who I've rented them to has been super blown away by them.

Hi Dan, great to meet you.

IIRC, wasn't the 50mm noticeably contrastier and warmer than the 85mm?
Do you know if SLR Magic's Andrew Chan is going for consistent character between the lenses?

Billy

Billy ! It was my pleasure hanging out with you as well.

I don't recall it being that different - I believe they are supposed to match well - let's see what Nick's results show with the test.

best,

Dan

Ok, 2 SLR Apo lenses will create problems ...
like i said 6 months ago.
Give it another 2 years. In the meantime there are other options with full sets.

I don't remember it being contrastier and warmer. Standing next to Dan while both were tested we both felt the draw on the len(s) was nice and seemed consistent with the other. But as Dan implies the test will allow closer scrutiny. In your late post you indicate two APOs will cause problems. Is that because it is a truncated set? If so you won't have to wait two years (maybe for all 5 or 6) because SLR Magic has the 25,50 and 85, with case, new filters and pl mounts with ef adapters leaving this week headed for Big Fresh Pond.
