  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Cards n Slots

I took Jeff's advice and have the Rocket in slot 2 and the Quadro in slot 4 and it's working really well. Can get several nodes going at full framerate using 1/2 PREMIUM R3Ds.

Is that slot 2 in the Cubix as well as slot 4?

No Cubix, just the Mac Pro. Works surprisingly well. Slot 1 - 5770, Slot 2 - Rocket, Slot 3 - BM card, Slot 4 - Quadro (no monitor attached)

Obviously if you were a dedicated grading facility you would go the extra mile with the Cubix, more Quadros etc. but to be able to add the vast power of Resolve for $1,600 including the Quadro, who could say no?

Bliss

Thats great! What are you using for hard-drives, just internal or FW800s?
We def needed the Cubix for the Avid part.

Hey Eric,

I've tried every combination all the way down to a USB toaster holding a RAW SATA drive! Even that works okay!

I have found that, for my work, I don't need anything faster, they are all viable. This is the case (for me) for a few reasons:

1. I am generally working with a single R3D at any moment in my timeline (I'm not typically layering)
2. I'm not laying back to tape so if I momentarily drop 2FPS it's not critical
3. Can always drop into PROXY mode or use a render cache etc.
4. I don't have clients sitting in the room so don't need to apologize if it catches once in a while

I've spent the majority of time coming off a single SATA internal to the Mac Pro. These are capable of about 80MBs and an R3D is nowhere near that.

Again, I'm just saying it's feasable to run a stock Mac Pro (adding the Quadro 4000) and get great results with Resolve. If you need better performance then you need the Cubix, more Quadros, RAID, etc. etc.

For me I'm not going to invest $10k into Resolve at the moment. Very happy to have spent a fraction of that to get it working well.

Jeff - I replaced my fan in my Cubix with a fan from newegg by gelid, costs under $10 and it is nearly silent. Comes with rubber shock mounts too. I also put them in my raid chassis, and now the loudest piece is the Mac pro, and I might get gelid fans for that soon too. Can barely tell the Cubix or raid enclosure is on until looking at the lights.

Tim

Anyone tried putting the Blackmagic card on the Cubix? There is no space on the mac pro to put the little HDMI bracket thing, yet I wonder if there would be any problems in putting the card on the Cubix. Any thoughts?

waiting to get our Cubix and will atttempt that too since the Cubix can do double cards :)
Im pretty sure it works according the vendor.
Cubix explained that its 16x for each lane but does it in a load balancing way.

Hi Tim,
might the model of repacement fan you used from Gelid be: Case Fan Silent 12?

I'm thinking of trying your suggestion. I do notice that this fan outputs 37CFM, whereas the model that comes from Cubix (Mechatronix F1238H) puts out 81CFM. Thats a big differnece in output which is probably why the Gelid is so much quieter. However, with only two 285 cards and a RR, the case is running so cool now, that I think 81CFM is overkill.
Thanks,
Paul

The ducted fan coolers on the GTX285 cards do an awesome job of cooling them. The fan on the Rocket just circulates the surrounding air. 81CFM is a lot and you're going to be hard-pressed to find a fan of that size that can move that much air and still be quiet. I've replaced mine with a Thermaltake fan, which isn't so much quieter, but is more pleasing in tone, I guess. It moves about the same amount of air..

With two GTX285's and a Rocket, you could get away with a lower amount of airflow. Not sure if 37CFM would do it in the long term, but it really just comes down to exchanging enough air to keep the cards from overheating. The Rocket in particular for this scenario. Monitor your temps and see how it's working out for you. I agree that 80CFM is probably overkill for most configurations.

With all this fan noise talk wat db levels do you guys work in?
Our studio has its own A/C unit that rivals the rest of the corporations building :P
Our room is only 10 x 12 and everything is in a rack with a glass door.
Basically its loud and at times too cold in that room.

Everything is working fine for me with the gelid. The stock fan was pushing way more air than necessary. Right now I'm running a rocket, decklink extreme 3d, a spare fw card, and a GTX 480 (more on this soon). The only place I feel any heat coming out is straight from the 480. The rocket and decklink have been only a little warm, even running outside in 100 degree heat. Basically there's no way sound would put up with the stock fan on set, now it's running quieter than last season after adding the Cubix due to putting the gelid fans in my raid enclosure as well.

I just finally set up the Cubix and have the BM card right at slot 4.
Love the doubl slots on this baby :)
Still debating where to place the ATTO R380 since the last slot on Mac Pro is 4x.
Has anyone found any probs with any ATTO or RAID card in a Cubix Xpander?
My current Cubix line-up:
1. Quadro 4000
2. Blank (might put the ATTO here or Avid Host)
3. RED Rocket
4. BM DeckLink HD

The Mac Pro:
1. AMD 5870 (or another Quadro 4000)
2. Cubix Host
3. Avid Host for Nitris DX
4. ATTO R380

As Im typing this the Cubix is open waiting for me to make a decision.

My H680 runs just fine in the Cubix, but I'm running my R680 in slot 4 of my Mac Pro...zero problems great performance running dual gTech SAS RAIDs
Is the H680 mounting at all times? My worries is that if I put it in the 3rd slot of the Cubix the drives wont mount.
Im on vaca so I cant test any of this for weeks. But its eating me up :)

I'm using the Quadro 400 for GUI, and 2-286s for GPU. No problems. So seems like it must be something related to multiple quadros regardless of GUI/GPU

is there a way to assign which pcie does what?

Hi guys,

bumping an old thread here, but was wondering if anyone has some advice.
Trying to get a semi-decent RAID setup out of our quite full mac pro, I have seen from some posts in this thread users saying that they have had good experiences running RAID controllers from slot 4 the 4x times slot.
Is there anything I should be aware of here? Hoping to setup a SAS controller in slot 4, looking at an Areca.
Any advice / help would be appreciated, thanks ^_^
