I'm really falling hard for these! Especially those close ups ! Very nice.

But, i'm kinda wondering if this look could be achieved with glimmer glass #1 filter?

What do you think?
Thanks,
Tim

Timothy,

Surely the rendering of an image this lens provides is more complicated than that. But maybe a similar look could b achieved with a glimmer glass #1 filter to some extent.

Even though the title talks about "Capturing The Best Image With Atomos CEO Jeromy Young on Adorama Live", which they do talk to Jeromy Young in the Latter part of the Video, from about the 1:00 mark of this video to the 11:14 mark is all about the Canon Sumire Prime lenses

As I said in post #37 I've shot with prototypes. They behave similar to vintage super speeds like the K35 and Zeiss Super Speeds. Wide open they are soft and prone to flare and halation which significantly changes to a neutral, sharp look when stopped down. The bokeh is round, with a tendency to cat eyes and keeps the circular shape when stopped down what for example Super Speeds don't do.

In the end it's all about glass and not so much about filters or sensors. Dimensionality can't be filtered or created with a sensor. This, too, is what good primes and some zooms deliver. Sometimes very obvious (Cooke 18-100) or less pronounced (Summicrons or Master Primes) but always with some personality. That also counts for vignetting, spherical abberations (think amorphic glass), breathing and flaring.

There is a reason why a well maintained K35 set costs a fortune and 30 years old Zeiss Super Speed aren't a bargain neither.

In this regard the Sumire Primes are a very interesting offer, with a tendency to a warm feeling and some contrast, which again kicks in when stopping down. They surely don't compete with Master Primes, quite the opposite.

Hans Von Sonntag and the Canon Sumire Prime cine lenses

By Canon Europe, Short Film by Reduser Member Hans von Sonntag

As cinematic aesthetics is becoming more and more of a demand for a wider range of types of film, expanding from traditional film and broadcast formats to commercials, music videos and corporate films, this puts new demands on DOPs. It's becoming increasingly important to carefully select the ideal set of lenses to get that cinematic look and feel that simply can't be produced by lighting design alone, or replicated in post-production.

Responding to this demand, Canon recently released a new range of full-frame cine primes, the Sumire Prime series, which are designed to give a softer, more cinematic look but with the same unified warm colour tone as Canon's other Cinema EOS lenses and a slightly warmer rendition that flatters skin tones.

To test out the Canon Sumire Primes cine lenses in real-world scenarios, three gifted cinematographers were tasked with shooting a cinematic short film. First one out was award-winning German DOP Hans von Sonntag with short film 'Love Us'. Shot on the island of Tenerife, where the toughest factor was bright, unforgiving overhead sunshine, this was a good test to see how the Sumire Prime lenses would deal with flare and skin tones.

He told the story of a young couple in love, largely using the unique look of the Sumire Prime CN-E35mm T1.5 FP X lens shot wide open to highlight the subjects while bringing out the dimensionality of the rugged, dusty landscape.

Behind the scenes with Hans Von Sonntag

By Canon Europe, Short Film by Reduser Member Hans von Sonntag

We go behind the scenes at Hans von Sonntag' short film 'Love Us', where he put the Canon Sumire Primes cine lenses to the test. Hans talks about his experience using he lenses and the benefits he found.

Hans von Sonntag: "The lenses have a distinct vintage look but they bring vintage into Rec. 2020, in high resolution. Everything looks very sharp but when you shoot them wide open they behave like a vintage lens and flare like a vintage one, only much, much nicer."
